Hydrocortisone Cream for eczema and dermatitis

Hydrocortisone cream is a medicine which can be used to treat a range of skin problems in adults or children. The conditions this cream can be used against include eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, prickly heat rash, nappy rash and insect bites and stings.

Hydrocortisone cream is easy to use and a popular treatment for dealing with dry skin problems. It is available to buy from numerous brands including Canesten, HC45, Anusol and Daktacort. Alternative versions of this cream are also available which include other ingredients such as antifungal treatments like clotrimazole or miconazole.

How does Hydrocortisone Cream work?

Hydrocortisone cream belongs to a group of medicines known as topical corticosteroids (or simply steroids). It is able to treat dry skin conditions and other skin problems by countering the effects of inflammatory chemicals in the body which cause symptoms and calming irritation which exists in the affected areas of skin. This gives the affected skin a chance to heal properly without being aggravated by picking and scratching.

Who can use Hydrocortisone Cream?

If you (or your child) have a dry skin condition or a similar issue which hydrocortisone cream is designed to treat, then you can consider this medication. Depending on certain circumstances and where you plan to use it, however, some precautions may prove necessary. For instance, if you have a skin infection such as athlete’s foot, chickenpox, shingles or cold sores, then hydrocortisone cream is not an appropriate treatment.

You should speak to your doctor or local pharmacist before using this cream if any of the following apply to you:

  • You have psoriasis
  • You will be using this cream to treat dermatitis or nappy rash on a child/infant. Treatment in infants should be limited to a maximum of seven days.
  • You are applying the cream under an airtight dressing, including a child’s nappy. These dressings make it easier for the active ingredient to pass through the skin. It is therefore possible to accidentally end up using too much cream.
  • You are pregnant, breast-feeding or think you may be pregnant

Hydrocortisone Cream dosage instructions

For both adults and children, it is recommended to gently apply a thin layer of hydrocortisone cream to the affected area(s) two or three times a day. The smaller the patient is, the less cream you will need to apply. A course of treatment for a child should not usually last for more than 7 days (unless your doctor has instructed you to use it for longer).

If you forget to apply a dose of this medication, then use the cream as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Never take a larger dose than recommended to make up for a forgotten dose. Applying more of this cream than you should increases the chances of side effects.

Hydrocortisone Cream on face

You should avoid using hydrocortisone cream on your face, unless your doctor says it’s ok and has given you a prescription for it. Some people have considered whether hydrocortisone cream could be used against skin problems on the face such as acne and rosacea. However, this cream is not particularly effective against such problems and could in fact end up making them worse.

Hydrocortisone Cream side effects

Hydrocortisone cream (particularly in its mild form) is very safe to use and people who use it usually don’t experience any side effects if their duration of treatment lasts less than 4 weeks. If you use this cream for a longer period, then side effects are more likely but not guaranteed. Side effects are overall more likely if you are using a strong version of hydrocortisone cream rather than a mild form.

Possible side effects can include a burning or stinging sensation for a few minutes after applying the cream, but this usually stops happening after using the cream for a few days. If you experience any side effects which are severe or prolonged, then you should report this to a doctor or nearby hospital emergency department as soon as possible.

Can I get hydrocortisone cream without a prescription?

You can purchase mild hydrocortisone cream without a prescription. Certain versions of this treatment, like hydrocortisone butyrate, require a prescription because they are stronger.

Buying mild hydrocortisone cream from an online pharmacy such as Doctor-4-U can be done without a prescription, but you will still need to complete a short medical questionnaire before confirming your order. This is necessary to confirm that it is safe and appropriate for you to use hydrocortisone cream for the issue you’re looking to treat. When you complete the questionnaire, your answers will be reviewed by one of our GMC/EU registered doctors and if they find your order to be ok, it will usually be dispatched within 24 hours.

How is my order shipped to me?

When an order is ready for shipping, it is collected and delivered by either the Royal Mail or DPD depending on your preference (or possibly your location or the item you ordered). Each order is assigned a tracking number, which will be emailed to you at the time of dispatch. Your medicine will be sent in plain and discreet packaging. We do not include any branding on our packaging nor any labels which inform readers what type of product is contained within.
