HRT (Menopause)

Indivina

Indivina is a tablet medication used for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in a continuous combined form. Available in three strengths, Indivina tablets add two hormones to the body called estradiol and medroxyprogesterone. By doing this, Indivina lessens the effects of the various symptoms women can experience when going through the menopause.

These tablets can also serve as a second line treatment for women who are at risk of osteoporosis during the menopause. Indivina tablets are taken once a day and are manufactured by Orion Pharmaceuticals in the UK.

Prices start from £75.00 for 84 tablets

What is Indivina?

Indivina is a tablet used as a continuous combined form of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). It is used to treat the symptoms of the menopause and can also be used to treat the bone-weakening condition osteoporosis when other forms of medication are deemed unsuitable. Available in three strengths, Indivina is used by menopausal women who have not had a natural period for at least three years.

During the menopause, women can potentially experience all kinds of symptoms which can affect their day-to-day life. Those with a family history of osteoporosis are among those particularly vulnerable during the menopause as the risk of fractures increases for them. Indivina is one of many forms of HRT which are available to be prescribed and purchased in response to the potential challenges created by the menopause.

How does Indivina work?

Indivina contains two active ingredients called estradiol and medroxyprogesterone. Estradiol is a form of the hormone oestrogen, which is produced naturally by a woman’s body but is vastly reduced during the menopause. Indivina compensates for the naturally decreasing levels of oestrogen in the body, which often causes many of the symptoms associated with the menopause.

Medroxyprogesterone is a synthetic form of the hormone called progesterone. It balances the effect of estradiol and prevents any potential excess growth of the lining of the womb (which can lead to endometrial cancer). All of this means that Indivina can be used by women who have not had their wombs removed and that’s why it is known as a combined hormone replacement therapy. Women who have had their womb removed typically use a form of HRT that only adds oestrogen to their body.

What are the side effects of Indivina?

It is possible when taking Indivina that irregular bleeding may occur, particularly during the first few months of treatment, but not everyone experiences this side effect. Even when someone does, it often disappears with continued treatment.

Other potential side effects caused by Indivina are a rarity. However, certain diseases have been reported more often in women who use HRT when compared to women who do not use HRT. These diseases include the following:

  • Breast cancer
  • Abnormal growth or cancer found in the lining of the womb
  • Heart disease
  • Blood clots in the veins of the legs or lungs
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Stroke
  • Memory loss if HRT is started over the age of 65

How long should I take Indivina for?

When a doctor prescribes you Indivina, they will aim to prescribe the lowest dose that can treat your symptoms for as short as necessary. Indivina tablets are taken once day, ideally at around the same time each day. The blister sheet the tablets are contained within have calendar days printed on to help you keep track of your daily tablet intake. The tablets are swallowed whole and can be taken with a glass of water if required.

While you’ll usually start on the lowest dose, you may later be prescribed a stronger one if deemed necessary. Talk to your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after three months of taking the tablets. If you feel that the effects of Indivina are too weak or too strong, consult your doctor before you decide to alter your dosage or stop taking the tablets.

Can I take Indivina tablets?

If you have not had a period for at least three years and have never previously taken HRT or your switching from another continuous combined HRT product, then you can start taking Indivina on any day. If you were previously taking a cyclical form of HRT, then you should wait at least a week after taking the last of your previous treatment before starting on Indivina.

You should avoid taking Indivina tablets if you have or ever had any of the following medical conditions:

  • Breast cancer
  • Any form of cancer that is sensitive to oestrogens (e.g. cancer of the womb lining)
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Excessive thickening of the womb lining
  • Blood clot in a vein within the legs or lungs
  • A current or recent disease caused by a blood clot (e.g. heart attack, stroke or angina)
  • A rare blood problem named porphyria
  • Allergic to estradiol valerate or medroxyprogesterone acetate
  • A liver disease which means your liver function tests have not yet returned to normal

What if I take too much Indivina?

If you or somebody you know has taken too many Indivina tablets than they should, then get in touch with your doctor or pharmacist and they’ll advise you. An overdose of Indivina could possibly make you feel sick, or it could lead to a headache or uterine bleeding.

What if I forget to take Indivina?

When you are taking Indivina, it is best to take the tablets around the same time each day. If you do end up forgetting a tablet, it’s best to just leave it out and take the next one at the time you planned to have it. Missing a tablet or regular use of this medication can lead to breakthrough bleeding or spotting.
