What is Isotrex?

Isotrex gel is a treatment for dealing with the symptoms of acne. When applied, it blocks pores and prevents the formation of spots. The gel allows the skin to get rid of current spots that developed as part of acne, while stopping new ones from emerging, reducing the appearance of this irritating condition. Isotrex is used by young people who are going through or have recently gone through puberty, as well as adults.

How does Isotrex work?

This gel contains an active ingredient called isotretinoin, which is similar to Vitamin A. When the gel is applied to an area of skin affected by acne, the treatment unblocks pores (filled with an oil the body naturally produces called sebum), allowing blackheads and whiteheads to be evicted from the skin more easily.

On top of this, the treatment also encourages turnover of skin cells, known as exfoliation, which makes it more difficult for new spots to form. This vastly reduces the appearance of acne, as the skin is able to get rid of current spots without seeing new ones appear in their place.

How do I use Isotrex?

The area of the skin the gel will be applied to should be washed and dried properly prior to using this treatment. When this is done (and your hands are washed and any make-up is removed), a thin layer of gel should be applied using your fingertips. The gel should be applied to all of the area of the skin that has acne, not just each spot. This treatment is used on affected areas of skin once or twice a day.

Take plenty of care not to use too much gel, especially if you are using it on an area of skin close to your eyes. You’ll also want to avoid letting it build up in the angles of your nose, skin folds, or other areas of the skin that don’t require treatment.

This treatment is designed for the skin only and is not suitable for use on the mouth, lips or eyes. Also avoid using this gel on areas of skin affected by cuts, grazes or sunburn or particularly sensitive areas of skin such as around the neck.

What are the side effects of Isotrex?

Numerous side effects are possible when using Isotrex gel, although not all users will experience them. The most common side effects from using this medication include the following:

  • Redness or peeling of your skin (most likely to occur during the first few weeks of use)
  • Skin irritation or tenderness
  • Burning sensation on the skin
  • Dry, itchy skin

In rare cases, this gel has been reported to cause darkening or lightening of skin and increased sensitivity to sunlight. If you experience any side effects that are alarming, speak to your doctor or pharmacist for advice. The chances of experience skin irritation as a side effect is more likely if you are using any other acne treatments as the same time as Isotrex. If you do get irritated skin, it’s best to stop using this gel until the irritation goes away, or you may need to stop using it all together if the irritation doesn’t leave.

Can I use Isotrex?

Before using Isotrex, it is worth bearing in mind that having certain health conditions or using certain other treatments can make using this gel a bad idea. You should speak to your doctor first before using Isotrex if any of the following apply to you:

  • You or any close family have had skin cancer
  • You have eczema, rosacea or perioral dermatitis
  • You experience skin reactions in the sunlight
  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breast-feeding (you should certainly avoid using Isotrex if any of these apply and talk to your doctor for advice)

You should also check with your doctor about medicines you are currently using or have recently used before making use of this acne treatment. This is especially important if you are using another acne treatment. If you are using another containing benzoyl peroxide, it can make Isotrex less effective. Other acne treatments used simultaneously alongside this particular gel could lead to skin irritation or aggravate existing symptoms.

What if I use too much Isotrex?

Using more Isotrex then recommended will not help to clear up your spots quicker, but it could create some undesirable side effects. You have more chance of experiencing redness, peeling or irritation of your skin if you use too much of this gel. If you do have these issues, it is best to stop using this medication for a few days and then start again when the irritation has subsided. If your symptoms do not appear to be going away even after several days, then contact your doctor about it as soon as possible.

How should Isotrex be stored?

This gel should be kept somewhere that is below 25 degrees centigrade and the tube should be tightly closed when not in use. Because the contents are flammable, this product should be kept away from all sources of fire, flame and heat. Avoid leaving this medication in direct sunlight too. When the product is first opened it should be used within two months. After that period any unused portion should be discarded and the same thing applies if the product has gone past its expiry date.
