Jardiance

Jardiance is a medication taken by patients who have type 2 diabetes. The treatment comes in the form of tablets which are taken on a daily basis when prescribed. With this medicine, patients are able to reduce the amount of sugar in their blood when lifestyle changes or other medication are not enough to keep it at the right level.

What is Jardiance?

Jardiance tablets are used to treat patients with type 2 diabetes that cannot be controlled through diet and exercise alone. It may be prescribed in cases where a patient cannot take metformin, which is a different type of diabetes medication. Jardiance may possibly be taken alongside certain other medicines to help manage blood sugar levels.

How does Jardiance work?

Jardiance contains a substance called empagliflozin, which is able to tackle the issue caused by diabetes - having too much sugar in the blood. The medication blocks a certain type of protein from being active in the kidneys, which causes blood sugar (glucose) to be removed through your urine. This adjustment reduces the overall amount of blood sugar in the body.

How do I take Jardiance?

The starting dose when prescribed Jardiance is usually one 10mg tablet a day. Your doctor will decide whether it’s worth increasing your dose to one 25mg tablet a day. You will likely remain at 10mg per day if you have a kidney problem.

The tablets should be swallowed whole with water and you can take them with or without food. It is up to you at what time the tablets are taken, but it is preferable to have them around the same time each day.

What are the side effects of Jardiance?

There are numerous kinds of side effects that could occur while using this medication, although not everyone will experience them. Among the more common side effects possible are an urge to pass urine or more frequent urination. These may be indicators that you have a urinary tract infection. Other indicators you have got such an infection include the following:

  • Burning sensation while passing urine
  • Your urine appears cloudy
  • Pain in the pelvis or mid-back pain (due potentially to a kidney infection, in addition)

If you notice an increase in such symptoms, you should contact your doctor about them as soon as possible. Also, if you take Jardiance with another medication that can cause low blood sugar, such as insulin or sulfonylurea, then the chances of experiencing this particular side effect is greater. Signs of having low blood sugar include the following:

  • Shaking and sweating
  • Feeling confused and very anxious
  • Fast heart beat
  • Excessive hunger
  • Headache

Again, your doctor can advise you on what to do if you end up showing the signs of having low blood sugar levels. If you experience this side effect, it’s usually recommended that you take glucose tablets, eat a high sugar snack and drink fruit juice. Other common side effects from taking Jardiance include:

  • Genital yeast infection (thrush)
  • Itching
  • Rash or red skin
  • Thirst
  • Blood tests may show an increase in cholesterol levels in your blood

Other side effects can potentially appear on rare occasions while using this medication. Contact your doctor for advice if you experience any and stop using this medication if any seriously affect your health in a troubling fashion.

Can I take Jardiance?

Certain circumstances may affect how suitable this medication is for treating your condition. For instance, this medication is not deemed suitable for those aged below 18 or those 85 or over. You should consult your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before or during treatment with these tablets if any of the following apply to you:

  • You experience rapid weight loss, sickness, stomach pain, excessive thirst, unusual breathing, a sweet smell to your breath, a sweet or metallic taste in your mouth or a different odour to your urine or sweat. These symptoms could be a sign of diabetic ketoacidosis, which is a rare but serious disease. Contact your doctor or nearest hospital right away if you show signs of having this disease.
  • You have a serious liver or kidney problem. If this is the case, your doctor may prescribe you a different medicine.
  • You may be at risk of dehydration. Your doctor may ask you to stop taking this medication until you’ve recovered.
  • You have or get a serious infection of the kidney or urinary tract with fever. Your doctor may ask you to stop taking this medication until you’ve recovered.
  • You are taking (or have recently used) other medicines besides Jardiance. It’s particularly important to highlight any medicines that increase urine production (diuretics). Your doctor may ask you to stop taking Jardiance if you are taking medication which has this effect.
  • You are pregnant, breast-feeding or think you may be pregnant.
  • You have an intolerance to some sugars. These tablets contain lactose (milk sugar).

What if I take too much Jardiance?

If you accidentally take a larger dose of this medication than you were meant to, seek medical help immediately. If you go to a hospital, take the medicine pack with you if possible.

What if I forget to take Jardiance?

If you forget to take a dose of this medicine at the usual time, then the best action to take depends on how long it is until your next dose is due. If it is 12 hours or more until your next dose, then take the one that is late as soon as you remember, then take the next dose at the usual time. If it is less than 12 hours until your next dose is due, then skip the missed dose and take the next one at the usual time. Never take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
