What is Kliofem?

Kliofem is a continuous combined Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) which is taken to relieve the symptoms that can occur during the menopause. The tablets, which are taken on a daily basis, contain two hormones and are used specifically by patients who have not had their womb surgically removed. This medication can also serve as a way of preventing osteoporosis, which is a bone-weakening condition that some women become more likely to experience during the menopause.

How does Kliofem work?

Kliofem adds two hormones to the female body known as oestrogen and progesterone. Oestrogen is added because women produce this naturally but the amount they do drops significantly during the menopause. It’s this drop in oestrogen that can cause the symptoms associated with the menopause, such as hot flushes and problems sleeping. Kliofem relieves the symptoms by restoring the level of oestrogen in the body back to the level it was pre-menopause.

Other types of HRT which exist add only oestrogen, but these are used only by women who have had their womb surgically removed. When oestrogen is added to the body of someone who still has their womb, the levels of the hormone being added need managing to avoid potential health complications with the womb. That is why continuous combined HRT also adds progesterone, since it is capable of keeping oestrogen levels in the body in check.

How do I take Kliofem?

Each strip in a pack contains 28 tablets and one tablet is taken each day at around the same time. When one strip of tablets is finished, the next set of tablets are started straight away until all tablets in the pack are used. Ideally, the tablets are taken with a glass of water. They can be taken either with or without food.

When is the right time to take Kliofem?

If this is the first time you’re using HRT, then you can start the course of Kliofem tablets on any convenient day. If, however, you are switching to Kliofem from a different HRT which allowed monthly bleeding to occur, then start your treatment after the bleeding has ended.

What are the side effects of Kliofem?

A range of side effects are possible when taking Kliofem or other versions of continuous combined HRT, although you may not experience any. The most common side effects associated with Kliofem include the following:

Breast pain/tenderness
Headaches
Vaginal bleeding
Vaginal inflammation
Weight gain due to fluid retention
Migraine (new or worse)
Depression (new or worse)
Enlarged/swollen breasts
Nausea
Abdominal pain/discomfort
Back pain
Leg cramps
Uterine fibroid
Swelling of arms and legs
Weight increase

Other symptoms are rare but some can be very serious, so talk to your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible if you experience side effects while using this medication. You should stop taking Kliofem and seek medical help immediately if you experience a hypersensitivity/allergic reaction.

Research has found that certain diseases are reporting more often in women who use HRT compared to those that do not. These conditions include:

  • Breast cancer
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Cancer of the lining of the womb
  • Blood clots in the veins of the legs or lungs
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Probable memory loss if HRT is started when aged over 65

Can I use Kliofem?

There are certain health conditions and unrelated medications which could possibly prohibit you from taking Kliofem or other types of HRT safely. You should let your doctor know about health conditions you have and other medications you are currently taking before you start Kliofem.

You shouldn’t buy kliofem before speaking to a doctor if you have any of these health conditions:

  • You have or have previously had breast cancer
  • You have cancer of the womb lining or another oestrogen dependent cancer
  • You have unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • You have excessive thickening of the womb lining that is not being treated
  • You have or have previously had a blood clot in a vein such as in the legs or lungs
  • You have a blood clotting disorder
  • You have or have previously had a disease caused by blood clots in the arteries. For example, a heart attack, stroke or angina
  • You have or have previously had a liver disease and your liver function has not returned to normal
  • You have a rare blood problem called porphyria

Certain medicines could interfere with the effects of HRT, so it’s important to inform your doctor or pharmacist in advance if you are currently using any of these:

  • Medicines that treat epilepsy (such as phenobarbital or phenytoin)
  • Medicines that treat tuberculosis (such as rifabutin or rifampicin)
  • Medicines for HIV or hepatitis C infections (such as ritonavir and telaprevir)
  • Herbal remedies that contain St. John’s Wort
