Lamisil

Lamisil is a prescription medication used to treat fungal infections usually of the toenails and fingernails. Fungal infections occur when there is an imbalance in the fungi that grows naturally in the body and is usually harmless. In the right environment fungi can grow and multiply and it is this overproduction that causes infections. Fungi thrives in warm, dark and moist environments which is why fungal infections usually affect the toenails. Fungal infections of the nails cause symptoms of nail discolouration, brittle and thickened nails, loss of nails, and pain and discomfort when walking. Lamisil tablets can treat and clear fungal infections of the skin and nails.

How does Lamisil work?

Lamisil contains the active ingredient, terbinafine, which is an antifungal medicine. It treats fungal infections by stopping the production of ergosterol, a protein that is vital for the survival of fungi. This eventually destroys the fungal cells so it cannot multiply and eventually the infection is cleared. It essentially rebalances fungi to a healthy amount. This antifungal medicine may be taken for a long period of time to fully fight the infection.

Who is suitable to take Lamisil tablets?

Lamisil tablets are suitable for adults who have been diagnosed with a fungal infection of the skin or nails, and the infection is causing pain, discomfort and an unpleasant appearance. Some people may be at risk of complications of fungal infections and will need treatment such as Lamisil to clear the infection and avoid these complications. For instance, diabetics are risk of major complications if they have an infection in the feet and will need treatment straight away.
