Levest

Levest is one of the many oral contraceptive tablets which can be bought in the UK nowadays. Treatments like this one are commonly referred to as “The Pill”. Levest belongs to the family of contraceptives known as hormonal contraceptives, since it manipulates the body’s hormones to prevent pregnancy. Levest is a combined contraceptive pill which contains both an oestrogen and a progesterone hormone.

Treatments like levest can do an effective job of protecting women from pregnancy without interrupting sex. Since it alters your hormones to have its effect, levest may cause some side effects such as mood swings. However, oral contraceptives like levest can be stopped immediately if the side effects prove to be too much.

  • You should take ONE tablet at the same time each day for 21 days, followed by 7 days of not taking any tablets before repeating the cycle. However, if you take a hormonal contraceptive that is designed to be taken every day (also known as an "ED" pill), you should not take a 7 day break after day 21.
  • Always take your tablet at the same time each day
  • If you miss a dose or take your tablet later than you should, read the patient information leaflet or speak to a GP or pharmacist for advice, as you may not be protected against pregnancy.
  • If you experience vomiting or severe diarrhoea, this medication may not work effectively. Because of this, it's recommended that you use condoms or other barrier methods for 7 days after you've experienced illnesses like these.

Buy Levest contraceptive pill online

Levest is a type of combined oral contraceptive. Each tablet contains two hormones - an oestrogen hormone and a progestogen hormone - which work together to prevent pregnancy. When taken correctly, levest is a highly effective form of contraception because it essentially adjusts your hormones in a way that stops pregnancy from happening (in a similar way to how your hormones naturally adjust to stop pregnancy when you are already pregnant, for instance).

Combined contraceptive tablets like levest are distinguishable from certain alternative products which contain only progestogen (known as POP or mini-pills). Levest is a type of 21-day pill, meaning you take one pill a day for 21 days then have a 7-day break before starting the next pack.

You’ll require a prescription from a GMC/EU certified doctor in order to buy this medication online. To buy Levest from Doctor-4-U, simply complete our online consultation and if you are deemed suitable, we will dispatch your medication usually within 24 hours.

How does Levest work?

Levest contains ethinylestradiol, a synthetic version of a naturally occurring oestrogen hormone, as well as levonorgestrel, a type of progestogen hormone. These work together to stop an egg being released into the ovaries and then fertilised. Levest essentially tricks the body into thinking that processes it has to do to prepare for potential pregnancy have already occurred before they can happen.

Please note that levest does not help protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). You should use precautionary measures like a condom to ensure safer sex, and you should take an STI test every time you have a new sexual partner.

Who is Levest suitable for?

Levest is designed for women over the age of puberty and before the age of menopause who want to prevent pregnancy. However, your medical history may mean it isn’t safe for you to take this medication.

You should not take Levest if any of the following apply to you:

  • You are allergic to ethinylestradiol, levonorgestrel, or any of the other ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet
  • You are pregnant
  • You or your family have a history of blood clots
  • You have had angina, a heart attack or a stroke
  • You have had breast cancer, or cancer of the genital organs
  • You have bad migraines
  • You have severe chronic liver disease
  • You have unexplained vaginal bleeding

If you have any medical conditions besides the one listed above, you should mention these to your doctor or local pharmacist to check that you're still ok to take levest and to determine if any precautions will be necessary. You should also disclose any other medications which you are currently taking, since certain ones can interact with contraceptives like levest.

It’s particularly important to mention if you are using any of the following:

  • Any medicines which treat epilepsy
  • Any medicines which treat tuberculosis
  • Any medicines which treat HIV infections
  • Any medicines which treat high blood pressure in the blood vessels in the lungs
  • Any medicines which contain cyclosporin
  • The herbal remedy St. John’s Wort

Levest pill side effects

Like with other medications, levest may cause side effects, but not everyone experiences them. Common side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Stomach ache or abdominal pain
  • Mood swings
  • Painful breasts
  • Headaches
  • Acne
  • Weight gain

Other side effects are possible but also uncommon. The most common ones usually only last for a short period. If you experience any side effects which are prolonged or severe (such as symptoms of a blood clot or allergic reaction), then contact a doctor immediately. There is a possible small link between Levest and breast cancer, which you can read about in the patient information leaflet.

Levest dosage instructions

Levest is known as a 21-day pill, which means you take one pill per day for 21 days until the blister pack is finished, then have 7 pill-free days before starting the next pack. When you begin taking Levest, you should take the first pill on the first day of your period.

Make sure you take Levest at a similar time of day each day. If you miss a pill, then the most suitable course of action to take will depend on certain circumstances. If you’re less than 12 hours late taking your tablet, then you can have it as soon as you remember and your protection should not be reduced. If you’re more than 12 hours late taking a tablet, then take extra precautionary measures if you have sex over the next 7 days since the effects of levest will likely be compromised in that period. Speak to your doctor if you miss more than one tablet or you’re unsure of what to do.
