Allergy and Hayfever

Levocetirizine

Levocetirizine is used to fight the symptoms of hay fever. It works by blocking histamine receptors, which prevents the immune system from releasing defensive chemicals that cause the irritating symptoms associated with hay fever when exposure to allergens provoke the condition.

What is Levocetirizine?

Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride is a medication used to treat symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever). The treatment is designed to block the immune system from causing frustrating symptoms when a patient is exposed to the allergens that trigger them to begin with.

Ideally, patients would avoid the allergens that cause hay fever to develop in the first place. But a treatment like this one is useful when you know avoiding such allergens won’t likely be possible in the near future. As well as the generic version, Levocetirizine is also available in a branded form called Xyzal.

How does Levocetirizine work?

If you experience the frustrating symptoms that come associated with hay fever, then they happen because the immune system responds to allergens by releasing chemicals to fight them, increasing blood flow to the affected area. Levocetirizine prevents this response by blocking histamine receptors, minimising the impact of the body’s immune system in the process.

How do I take Levocetirizine?

Levocetirizine can be taken as tablets, which are swallowed whole with water or another liquid. The typical dose for adults and children aged 6 years and over is one tablet daily. These tablets can be taken with or without food.

There’s no strict guide on how long you should take this medication for, but it is ideal to take a tablet every day that you are exposed to an allergen that triggers your allergic rhinitis. Therefore, if you suffer from hay fever, you can take a tablet every day during the hay fever season.

What are the side effects of Levocetirizine?

Not everyone who takes Levocetirizine will experience side effects, but they are possible. The most common side effects (about 1 in 100 treated patients) that can occur with this medication include the following:

  • Sleepiness
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Inflammation of the throat
  • Swelling and irritation inside the nose
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dry mouth
  • Feeling sick
  • Tiredness

Other side effects are possible but are much rarer than those listed above. If you do experience any side effects that are serious, then you should tell your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible.

Can I take Levocetirizine?

Only patients aged 6 years old or above should take this medication. It is not recommended to children younger than this because the film-coated tablets this treatment comes in do not allow dose adaptation.

There are certain health conditions that may prohibit you from being able to take Levocetirizine. You should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before starting this treatment if any of the following applies to you:

  • You’re presently having difficulty emptying your bladder (because of a condition such as an enlarged prostate or spinal cord injury)
  • You have epilepsy or are at risk of convulsions (this medication could cause seizure aggravation)
  • You’re scheduled for allergy testing
  • There are other medicines you are currently taking or might take in the near future
  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding
  • You have lactose intolerance (Xyzal tablets contain lactose)
  • You suffer from kidney failure

If you are a patient who suffers from kidney failure, then you may still be able to use this medication, but it depends on the circumstances of your condition. A severe kidney failure (less than 10ml/min creatinine clearance) is more likely to prohibit you from taking Levocetirizine. With a less severe kidney failure, you may require a lower dosage than what’s typically instructed. This is something your doctor will advise you on.

What if I take too much Levocetirizine?

If you take more of this medication than you’re meant to, then it’s best to contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately. There are numerous symptoms that could be experienced as a consequence of this error. They include the following:

  • Dizziness and confusion
  • Restlessness
  • Feeling unwell
  • Diarrhoea
  • Fatigue
  • Dilation of the pupils
  • Itching
  • Drowsiness and sleepiness
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Shaking
  • Difficulty passing urine

If, by contrast, you forget to take a Levocetirizine tablet or choose to stop treatment earlier than forseen, then there should not be any side effects experienced. However, the symptoms of hay fever could potentially reappear. Never take a double dose of this medication to make up for a forgotten dose. If you do ever forget to take one of these tablets, then just skip the dose and take the next one at the usual time.
