Lidocaine 5% Ointment

Lidocaine is a type of anaesthetic treatment used to numb areas of the body which may be in pain or subject to pain if, for instance, you’re due to have a needle. The numbing effect helps to relieve pain and discomfort for a short period and it is used in many different situations such as before a minor procedure, and to relieve pain, itching, and discomfort in conditions such as haemorrhoids, cold sores, and sore nipples in breastfeeding mothers.

Lidocaine is widely used in medical settings and in products that can be bought over the counter. Lidocaine in the form of an ointment makes it quick and easy to use and is more comfortable than other methods such as injection. The numbing effects get to work pretty quickly helping you to get on with your normal activities without feeling pain.

You can buy Lidocaine 5% ointment online at Doctor 4 U and although it’s suitable for most people without any adverse effects, you’ll need to answer some short questions which will be reviewed by our doctor to ensure you’re not at risk of adverse effects.

Prices start from £14.99 for one 15g tube

What is Lidocaine ointment used for?

Lidocaine is used in many different situations, it may be given to you via injection, cream, or ointment to numb the skin before receiving a needle or on the gums if you’re having a dental procedure so that you don’t feel any pain. It’s also used as a lubricant for rectal or urethral examination. In these circumstances, your health professional may apply lidocaine for you or tell you when and how to apply it before minor surgery.

You can use Lidocaine ointment to relieve the pain and itch of haemorrhoids (piles), shingles, cold sores, female genital itch (pruritus vulvae), rectal itch or ulcers, and also to relieve sore and tender nipples that often occur when breastfeeding. You may also use it on minor burns and insect bites.

How does it work?

Lidocaine is a local anaesthetic which means it causes a loss of feeling where it has been applied, it is different from general anaesthetic which makes you unconscious when undergoing major procedures. Lidocaine temporarily stops the nerves from sending signals to the brain which creates a numbing effect, and by stopping all feeling on the skin and surrounding tissues, any pain is temporarily non-existent. It may be used to treat pain or prevent pain from happening if, for example, you’re due to have a minor procedure.

Lidocaine is often applied to the skin and being in ointment form means it’s ideal for sensitive skin types. Ointments are quick and easy to apply and are more absorbent than creams making it more effective. Ointments also prevent moisture loss so if your skin is on the dry side, Lidocaine in the form of ointment may be more suited to you.

Lidocaine ointment for haemorrhoids

One of the uses of Lidocaine treatments is for the relief of piles, a condition that causes enlarged blood vessels in and around the anus that appear as lumps. Some Lidocaine ointments and creams may come with an applicator to treat internal haemorrhoids, however, this particular Lidocaine treatment is topical and can be used on external haemorrhoids. Lidocaine is not a cure for haemorrihoids but it helps with the pain and discomfort.

Who should not use Lidocaine ointment?

Lidocaine is generally well tolerated by most people, however, there are some circumstances where this medicine is unsuitable. You must not use this medicine if you are allergic to Lidocaine or any of the other ingredients in this medicine, or if you’re allergic to a similar amide local anaesthetic. If you’re planning on using Lidocaine alongside another treatment you must tell your doctor or pharmacist to ensure there isn’t a risk of interaction, for instance, if you’re treating haemorriods with another topical treatment and would like to use Lidocaine to make yourself more comfortable, speak to your health professional to ensure the drugs don’t interact and find out the best times to apply each medicine to ensure each is fully absorbed and doesn’t mix together.

Before using this medicine tell your doctor if you have liver, kidney, or heart problems and any medicines you may be taking for this.

Although Lidocaine can be used to numb dental pain, it must not be used to soothe teething pain in infants.

Can I take other medicines while using Lidocaine ointment?

You should always let us or your doctor or pharmacist know if you’re taking other medicines before starting Lidocaine treatment, this is to ensure that there isn’t a risk of interaction and side effects. This is particularly important if you’re taking cimetidine or propranolol.

Is Lidocaine safe to use while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Lidocaine is generally safe to use while pregnant or breastfeeding, however, we suggest you seek advice from your doctor so they can assess your individual condition first.

Using Lidocaine ointment to treat sore nipples from breastfeeding

Nursing mothers can often experience sore and tender nipples from breastfeeding and this can be distressing for some mothers. This usually happens because your baby is not attached to the breast properly, but getting help and advice from your midwife or doctor can help to resolve this so that feeds become more comfortable. Lidocaine ointment can be used on the nipple to help numb the pain, however, it should always be washed off completely before feeding your baby so that they don’t ingest the medicine.

How to use Lidocaine ointment

Always wash your hands before and after using Lidocaine so that you don’t spread it to another part of the body, or wear gloves if possible. You should also clean and dry the area that you’re applying the ointment to. If you’re using this medicine for pain relief you should apply around 1-2 ml (2-4 cm) of the ointment to the affected area and gently spread it onto the skin but do not rub it in. You may repeat this when you feel it’s needed, however, do not exceed 5g within a 24-hour period. How long the effects last varies but the area may be numbed for a few hours, you can then reply if necessary.

If you’re using this medicine to relieve sore nipples, apply using a sterilised gauze and remember to wash the ointment off your nipples before you feed your baby. Try not to rely on Lidocaine for sore nipples, it’s best to speak to your doctor if your nipples are persistently painful and if they’re cracking or bleeding you should get treatment early to prevent infection.

Are there any side effects of Lidocaine ointment?

Lidocaine doesn’t usually cause any adverse side effects. You may experience some minor irritation on the application site with redness, swelling, or burning or stinging sensation but this should subside after a few minutes. There may also be numbness in other areas where the ointment has accidentally been applied, this is why it’s important to wash your hands after use to prevent this from happening.

In rare cases, a severe allergic reaction may occur. Stop using this product and see your doctor or go to A&E immediately if you experience any symptoms of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips, or neck, difficulty breathing, or a skin rash or hives. Allergic reactions can be severe and potentially life-threatening so seek urgent medical attention if you show any of these signs.

If your condition is worsening while using this product, stop using immediately and consult your doctor. Lidocaine is not intended for prolonged use and this may increase the risk of side effects.
