What is Loceryl?

Loceryl is an antifungal treatment used to deal with fungal nail infections. A medicated nail lacquer, Loceryl is a treatment which is put on an affected nail with an applicator, allowing it to reach the source of infection and break it down. Loceryl could be used for anywhere between 6 and 12 months, depending on the location and severity of the nail infections.

How does Loceryl work?

Loceryl contains an active ingredient called amorolfine which is capable of killing a wide variety of fungi. When this medication is applied to the affected fingernails correctly, the nails absorb the nail lacquer over time, allowing the amorolfine to make direct contact with the fungal cells causing the infection.

The medication then prevents the fungi from producing a self-sustaining protein called ergosterol. Without the ability to produce ergosterol, holes begin appearing in the cell membrane and then the fungal cells expire one by one. This means the infection breaks down and symptoms are reduced.

How do I take Loceryl?

Your product’s information leaflet should include detailed instructions on how to use this treatment correctly. You can check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure about any of the steps required.

Before applying the treatment, you will need to file down the infected areas of nail, including the nail surface, as much as possible. You can do this with the nail file provided with the medication. You’ll also need to clean the surface of the affected nails using the swabs provided. When this is all done, the applicator included with the treatment is dipped into the bottle of nail lacquer. You’ll then apply the nail lacquer evenly over the entire surface of each nail that requires treatment. The treated nails are then left to dry for approximately 3 minutes.

The applicator is reusable but should be cleaned thoroughly following each treatment procedure. When it’s dry, the nail lacquer is unaffected by soap and water, so you should be ok washing your hands and feet as normal. If you need to use chemicals like paint thinners or white spirit, wear impermeable (waterproof) gloves to protect the lacquer on your nails. This treatment should be used for as long as necessary until the infection has cleared and healthy nails have grown back. This usually 6 months when treating fingernails, but if you use this treatment on toenails it can take 9 to 12 months.

What are the side effects of Loceryl?

Side effects are a possible consequence of using Loceryl but they are rare so many patients will not notice any. There is a small possibility that one or several of the following symptoms could emerge because of this treatment:

  • Nail damage or discoloration
  • Skin burning sensation
  • Redness, itching, blisters or hives on the skin
  • Systemic allergic reaction (signs include swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat and difficulty breathing)

If you do experience any side effects from using Loceryl, report them to your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible. If you do experience an allergic reaction, then it’s best to get to a hospital emergency department straight away. Stop using this medication and immediately remove any currently applied to your nails with a nail varnish remover or the cleaning swabs provide with this product.

Can I use Loceryl?

Loceryl is not known to have interactions with other medicines and you should be ok using this treatment even if you have other current health conditions besides fungal nail infections. However, certain circumstances may make this treatment ill-advised and you should avoid certain actions if you want to use other nail products while also using Loceryl. If you know you are allergic to any ingredients in this medication, or you are pregnant, breast-feeding or planning to get pregnant, then you should not start using Loceryl and inform your doctor to get advice on the next steps.

Cosmetic nail varnish can still be used while using this treatment, but you should wait at least 10 minutes after applying Loceryl before you begin painting your nails. Any nail varnish you’ve applied should be carefully removed before applying a fresh coating of the medication. Avoid using artificial nails while using Loceryl.

What if I forget to use Loceryl?

If you forget to apply this treatment at the intended time one day, then there’s no need to panic. Start using the product again in the same way as before once you remember it. If you’ve stopped using Loceryl on purpose, then check with your doctor that it’s okay to do this. It’s unwise to stop using this medication before you are instructed to because even if your symptoms seem much better, the infection could come back.
