What is loratadine?

Loratadine is a type of antihistamine, it is the active ingredient used in many brands of hay fever medicines such as Clarityn. You can buy loratadine in its generic form which works in the exact same way as its branded versions. Loratadine antihistamine is used to treat a range of allergy-related conditions such as hay fever or allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, eczema, and urticaria (hives on the skin). Unlike most antihistamines, loratadine is non-drowsy which makes it a good option if you need to drive and be productive in the day, however, there is a possibility of experiencing drowsiness as a side effect so do make sure you know how loratadine affects you before driving or using machinery.

How does loratadine syrup work?

Antihistamines such as loratadine work on a chemical called histamine which is naturally produced in the body. These chemicals are released in response to allergens that enter the body, this causes inflammation and all of the other symptoms that are associated with an allergic reaction. Loratadine blocks the effects of this chemical to stop the symptoms. Although histamine is an important immune response, in some cases it can overproduce and overreact to usually harmless substances such as pollen and cause severe symptoms.

Who is loratadine hay fever relief syrup suitable for?

This medicine is suitable for adults and children over the age of 2 years old who are suffering from symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever), or skin allergies.

Who should not take this medicine?

Can I take loratadine while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Loratadine is not recommended If you’re pregnant or planning to become pregnant, you can discuss with your doctor whether it’s suitable for you. Your doctor can advise you on the safest way to treat your allergy symptoms during pregnancy. The same applies if you’re breastfeeding, speak to your doctor or pharmacist to ensure there isn’t a chance the medicine could pass into breast milk and harm your child.

Can I take other medicines with loratadine syrup?

There are some medicines that could increase the chances of getting side effects, these medicines include:

  • Cimetidine
  • Erythromycin
  • Ketoconazole

It’s important to tell your doctor if you’re taking these medicines as they could interact with loratadine and cause unpleasant side effects. These medicines are especially important but do inform your doctor or pharmacist of any other medicines you may be taking that aren’t listed here, this includes non-prescription medication.

Can I take loratadine and cetirizine together?

Sometimes it may be appropriate to take different antihistamines or different hay fever treatments such as nasal sprays together with loratadine to control the symptoms, however, you should not take loratadine and another antihistamine such as cetirizine without consulting your doctor first. It is down to your doctor to decide whether it’s suitable for you to take these medicines at the same time.
