Losartan

Losartan is a drug taken by patients with high blood pressure. The ingredients in these tablets are able to improve the flow of blood through the blood vessels by relaxing them, decreasing blood pressure in the process. The medication may be used by patients who also have type 2 diabetes in addition to high blood pressure.

What is Losartan?

Losartan tablets are a medication used to treat high blood pressure and prevent the heart and kidneys from problems associated with this condition and diabetes. When taken by patients with enlarged hearts and high blood pressure, this treatment also effectively lowers the risk of strokes.

How does Losartan work?

Losartan belongs to a category of medicines called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. Angiotensin II is a substance the body produces which binds to receptors in blood vessels, causing them to tighten. This causes an increase in blood pressure.

This medication prevents the binding of receptors taking place, causing the blood vessels to be more relaxed and lowering blood pressure in the process. Losartan can also help patients with high blood pressure and type-2 diabetes by slowing the decrease of kidney function.

How do I take Losartan?

Losartan tablets are available in a few different strengths. Your doctor will determine the appropriate strength and dosage for you based on your condition and whether you are taking other medicines. The tablets should be swallowed with a glass of water. It is preferable to take the medication at around the same time each day and to keep using it until your doctor tells you otherwise. These tablets can be taken with or without food.

For adult patients, the typical dosage starts at 50mg taken once a day. For some patients, the dosage may be later increased to 100mg once daily. You should speak to your doctor or pharmacist if it seems the dosage is too strong or too weak, so it can be adjusted to the most suitable amount.

When used to treat children aged 6 to 18 years old, the recommended starting dose is up to 25mg daily. The daily dosage may be decreased or increased depending on the weight of the child and how their blood pressure responds to initial treatment.

If adult patients have type 2 diabetes as well as high blood pressure, then the initial dosage is usually 50mg a day. The dosage may be increased to 100mg daily depending on how the patient responds to treatment. The Losartan tablets may be taken alongside other blood pressure lowering medicines and with insulin or other commonly used medicines that decrease the level of glucose in the blood.

If adult patients have heart failure as a condition, then the daily dosage usually starts at 12.5mg. Typically, the dosage should be increased weekly step-by-step, meaning 12.5mg daily during the first week, then 25mg daily on the second week, 50mg daily on the third week and 100mg daily on the fourth. The maximum dosage can go up to 150mg daily as early as the fifth week depending on how the patient responds to the treatment. Patients with heart failure will usually take losartan alongside a diuretic and/or a digitalis plus possibly a beta-blocker.

What are the side effects of Losartan?

Side effects are possible while taking Losartan, although not all patients experience any. The most commonly reported side effects associated with this medication include the following:

  • Dizziness
  • Low blood pressure
  • Debility
  • Fatigue
  • Lack of sugar in the blood (hypoglycaemia)
  • Too much potassium in the blood (hyperkalaemia)
  • Changes in the kidney function
  • Reduced number of red blood cells
  • Increase in blood urea, serum creatinine and serum potassium in patients with heart failure

Other side effects are possible but are also much rarer. Some of the rare side effects can be really serious however. You should stop taking Losartan and seek medical help immediately if you experience any side effects that are particularly troubling or prolonged. Rare but serious side effects that require immediate action include a severe allergic reaction. Signs of this issue include a rash, itching, difficulty in swallowing or breathing and swelling of the face, lips, mouth or throat.

Can I take Losartan?

Before you start using Losartan, you should be sure that there aren’t any circumstances related to your health that would make taking these tablets ill-advised. You should not use this treatment if your liver function is severely impaired, you are more than 3 months pregnant or you are currently taking a blood pressure lowering medicine containing aliskiren.

It’s not recommended to use Losartan during early pregnancy or while breast-feeding. If it is used 3 or months in to it then serious harm could be caused to the baby. This medication should also not be used by children aged below 6 or any children suffering with kidney or liver problems.

You should let your doctor or pharmacist know about any other medicines you are currently taking before you start using Losartan. Take special care while using Losartan if you are also using any of these following medicines:

  • Other blood pressure lowering medicines
  • Unrelated drugs which are capable of lowering blood pressure (such as tricyclic antidepressants, antipsychotics, baclofen and amifostine)
  • Medicines that retain potassium or which may increase potassium levels (such as potassium supplements, potassium-containing salts or certain diuretics)
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as indometacin)

What if I take too much Losartan?

If you accidentally take more of this medication than you should contact your doctor immediately. You may experience symptoms including low blood pressure and an increased or decreased heartbeat.

What if I forgot to take Losartan?

If you accidentally miss a dose of this medicine, then simply skip it and take the next dose in the usual manner. Never take a double dose to compensate for one you forgot. If you want to stop taking this medication, then consult your doctor first.
