Lybrido

Lybrido is a drug that’s currently going through clinical trials with a view to being approved as a treatment for hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), which is now known as female sexual interest/arousal disorder (FSIAD).

Lybrido contains a combination of testosterone and sildenafil, and will aim to increase the sex drive of women suffering with HSDD or FSIAD.

Although Lybrido hasn’t been approved as a treatment yet, it’s thought to be on the horizon, and could be with us within the next two years.

Lybrido

Lybrido is a drug that’s being developed by Dutch company, Emotional Brain. It contains a combination of testosterone and sildenafil – the same drug that’s used in Viagra, and that’s also available in generic form to treat erectile dysfunction.

When the treatment eventually hits pharmacies, it will be in the form of a pink tablet, and will taste like mint. It will work sublingually, so women that want to take it will need to place the tablet under the tongue and wait for it to dissolve. This will ensure a rapid absorption into the bloodstream, meaning that it will be suitable for on-demand use.

With men, it’s recommended that sildenafil is taken 30-60 minutes before sex, but with Lybridos, it currently looks like women taking the drug will need to do so around 3.5 hours before intercourse for it to be most effective.

Although Lybrido is still going through clinical studies, the results so far look promising, with 940 women keeping a diary about their libidos, with some reporting that they find it easier to climax, or that they experience more orgasms per month when using the drug.

Can women take Viagra?

Although Lybridos is being nicknamed “female Viagra”, it’s important to know that women should not take Sildenafil on its own. This is due to the fact that it isn’t licenced for use in women, and it may not increase libido on its own, as sildenafil only helps to increase blood flow to the genitals rather than making you desire sexual intercourse.

Current NHS advice is that sildenafil (Viagra) should only be taken by men over the age of 18, and not by women or children.

These guidelines may change if or when Lybridos is approved, but for now, the advice is that women shouldn’t take sildenafil for any reason, including hypoactive sexual desire disorder or female sexual interest/arousal disorder.

Female Viagra

Lybridos may be nicknamed “female Viagra” for now, but its aim is different to how the drug works for men.

In men with erectile dysfunction, a lack of arousal isn’t necessarily the problem behind the condition, but for women with HSDD or FSIAD, a reduced libido is the issue.

“Female Viagra” is therefore a bit of a misnomer, as Viagra traditionally works by allowing blood to flow to the penis to achieve or maintain an erection, but the man taking sildenafil still needs to be aroused in order for the drug to work. With this in mind, sildenafil on its own wouldn’t be a suitable treatment for HSDD or FSAID as it doesn’t actually cause arousal.

In women, Lybridos will use combine sildenafil with testosterone, as previous studies have shown that it has helped to increase the sex drive of women with HSDD or FSIAD by increasing the amount of the male hormone in the body. As Lybridos contains both drugs, it’s thought that it will help both the brain and the body to respond to sexual cues, and improve the libido and sexual experience for women that suffer with a low sex drive.

Lybridos is actually being developed alongside another drug that’s intended for the treatment of HSDD/FSIAD – Lybridos. Despite the very similar names, Lybridos works in a slightly different way to Lybrido, and doesn’t contain any sildenafil.

HSDD

HSDD stands for hypoactive sexual desire disorder, though modern terminology favours “FSIAD”, or female sexual interest/arousal disorder.

Both names describe a condition where a woman loses interest in sex, and has a very low libido. Whilst this is common for many women, especially as they age, it can affect a woman’s self-esteem and quality of life.

Many women accept the lack of libido as part of growing older, or as a side effect of hormonal changes, but having no desire for sex can cause mental anguish and in some cases, problems in a relationship.

Some women aren’t bothered by the lack of sex drive, but for others, it can seriously impact their quality of life, and treatment may be considered to try and increase the woman’s libido.

HSDD treatment

Unfortunately, there are currently no treatments licensed in the UK to treat HSDD, which is why the news of Lybridos going through clinical trials is particularly welcome for many women. However, if you’re suffering with a low sex drive and want to change this, it’s always worth speaking to your own GP about treatment options that may be available to you, though it’s important to know that some of these may need to be used “off-label” for your condition.

Buy female Viagra

As Lybridos isn’t available yet, and there are currently no medications in the UK that are licensed to treat low libido in women, it’s unfortunately not yet possible to buy “female Viagra”.

Doctor4U is dedicated to keeping an eye out for new developments in treatments and licenses, and will be updating this page as soon as more information becomes available on the status of Lybridos, but for now, if you’re looking for a treatment for HSDD, you’ll need to speak to your own GP.
