Micralax Micro Enema explained

Micralax is a laxative medication which can be used to treat constipation. The treatment is a micro-enema which can be used at home to clear your lower bowel and make it easier for stools to pass.

This product is designed to work quickly at providing effective relief from the uncomfortable experience constipation provides.

When is it appropriate to use Micralax?

Having an enema is often done to either treat constipation or to administer medicines. It may also be required in order to clear your bowel before an x-ray or other type of examination. If you’re struggling to go to the toilet, or you’re having fewer than three bowel movements every week, then you could have constipation.

Micralax can be used if you are suffering from constipation and can be used by patients who are bedridden, elderly or giving birth. If you are experiencing symptoms that suggest you have constipation but want to check to be sure, then consider speaking to your GP or local pharmacist.

How does Micralax work?

Like other enema treatments, this medication comes in liquid form and is injected into your back passage (anus). Micralax contains two active ingredients which are sodium citrate and sodium alkylsulphoacetate. These work together in the medicine.

When Micralax is administered, it causes water to be drawn into the lower bowels. This creates more water in the stools, which means the stools become softer and it is therefore easier to empty them from your bowels.

How to use Micralax

Your product’s information leaflet will feature detailed instructions on how to administer Micralax correctly and your doctor or pharmacist will choose the dose that is right for you.

Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are ever unsure about how to use this treatment properly.

When you need to use Micralax, make sure you are nearby a toilet you can use. The usual dosage instructions are to use one tube. A fresh tube of Micralax should always be used whenever you require the treatment.

When ready to use it, you should lie down on your side with your needs drawn up towards your tummy. Alternatively, you could administer Micralax while sat on the toilet. Pull or twist the cap off the tube next and squeeze a drop of the medicine out onto the nozzle. Next, put the full length of the nozzle into your back passage. If you want, you can lubricate the nozzle before inserting it into your back passage. When it’s in position, gently squeeze the tube until it is empty.

Keep squeezing the tube as you pull the nozzle out. This is done to stop the medicine from being drawn back into the tube. Wait for the laxative to work, which usually works within 5 to 15 minutes after administering it.

Who should NOT use Micralax?

Even if you are currently experiencing constipation, Micralax may not be suitable for you to take in certain circumstances. For instance, if you have an inflammatory bowel disease then you should avoid using this particular treatment.

Check the ingredients of this medication carefully to confirm that you are not allergic to any of them. If you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or currently breast-feeding, then speak to you doctor or local pharmacist for advice about using Micralax before you start with it.

Does Micralax have any side effects?

Like with all medicines, side effects could be experienced after taking Micralax but they are very rare. Most people find that using this treatment does not cause side effects, provided it is used properly. If you do experience any side effects, then speak to your doctor or local pharmacist about them.

What if I use too much Micralax?

If you accidentally use more of this medication than you are supposed to, then you should contact your doctor or nearest hospital emergency department as soon as possible. You could experience diarrhoea or loss of fluid as side effects if you use too much Micralax.
