Rosacea

Mirvaso Gel

Mirvaso Gel is a medicine used in the treatment of redness of the skin caused by a skin condition known as rosacea. This is a long term condition that causes flushing of the skin and redness which is accompanied with a burning and stinging sensation, spots and sometimes the small blood vessels under the skin become visible. This condition may need to be managed with medication as there can be times when rosacea is particularly severe when exposed to a trigger such as stress or extreme temperatures. Mirvaso Gel contains the active ingredient brimonidine and treats the redness associated with rosacea.

How does Mirvaso Gel work?

The active ingredient in Mirvaso Gel, brimonidine, belongs to a group of medicines called alpha agonists which are used to narrow the blood vessels in the face. In people with rosacea, there may be too much blood flow to the face which is causing redness. By narrowing these blood vessels the blood flow is restricted and therefore the excess blood flow which is causing rosacea is reduced.

Who is suitable to use Mirvaso Gel?

Mirvaso Gel is suitable for adults over 18 years old who have been diagnosed with rosacea and have the symptoms of redness. This medicine is suitable for those who have persistent redness as a result of rosacea which needs to be controlled with medicine.

Who shouldn’t use Mirvaso Gel?

There are some people who will not be suitable to use this medicine to treat their rosacea and they should try alternative treatments. Mirvaso Gel has not been deemed safe to be used by children and adolescents under the age of 18 years old, particularly children under the age of 2 and so these patients are not suitable for this type of treatment. Other factors that make a medicine unsuitable could be if you take other medications, or have other existing health conditions or problems that may be made worse by using Mirvaso Gel. This medicine may also be unsuitable if you’re pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

Can I use Mirvaso Gel while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Before taking any medication when pregnant or breastfeeding you should consult your doctor to ensure that no harm will come to your unborn baby as a result of taking a particular medicine. Mirvaso Gel is not recommended for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women, or those that are planning to become pregnant. The effects and risks to your baby are unknown and therefore this medicine should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Speak to one of our online doctors if you’re concerned about your rosacea during pregnancy.

Mirvaso Gel and health conditions

If you have a health condition or a history of certain health conditions you should check with your doctor that using Mirvaso Gel won’t worsen your condition or cause side effects. Although this medicine is used to treat a skin condition it should not be used on irritated or broken skin. You should be particularly cautious of using this Mirvaso Gel if you have problems with your heart or circulation, or if you have or have had liver or kidney problems, as well as depression, or decreased blood flow to the hands, feet, or skin.

If you’ve ever had any laser procedures on the skin it’s not advised to apply Mirvaso Gel, likewise, this medicine is not the most suitable treatment if you plan to get a laser procedure done in the future.

Can I use Mirvaso Gel with other medication?

Taking different medications together can sometimes change the effectiveness of each drug and may even cause side effects. This is why it’s important to tell your doctor of any other medicines you’re taking whether they’re prescription or non-prescription. You should be particularly aware of the following medicines when taking Mirvaso Gel:

  • Medicines to treat depression or parkinson’s disease such as selegiline, moclobemide, imipramine, mianserin or maprotiline.
  • Medicines used to treat psychiatric disorders ( e.g. chlorpromazine)
  • Medicines used to treat hyperactivity (e.g. methylphenidate)
  • Medicines used to treat high blood pressure (e.g. reserpine)
  • Other alpha agonists
  • Cardiac glycosides used to treat heart problems
  • Medicines to lower blood pressure such as beta-blockers or calcium channel blockers
  • What are the side effects of Mirvaso Gel?

All medicines have side effects but not everyone will experience them, and some side effects are more rare than others. If you do experience any side effects you should stop using the gel and consult your GP as soon as possible to discuss alternative treatment for your rosacea. The side effects associated with rosacea include the following.

    Common side effects

Some of the more common side effects are known to affect up to 1 in 10 people, and these may include flushing, excessive whitening of the area where the gel is applied, redness of the skin, and a feeling of burning and itching on the skin. Out of all the side effects you’re likely to experience these, however, there is still only a 1 in 10 chance of these occurring and although they’re common you should still seek medical help if you experience any negative side effects.

    Uncommon/rare side effects

Other side effects may occur in just 1 in 100 or 1 in 1,000 people. You should pay close attention to signs of an allergic reaction such as a skin rash or swelling of the face, mouth or tongue. If you’re having an allergic reaction to this medicine stop using it right away and seek medical help immediately as this can be dangerous and potentially life-threatening. However, an allergy to Mirvaso Gel is rare.

    Other rare side effects include:

    • Acne
    • Dry mouth
    • Cold hands and feet
    • Feeling hot
    • Headache
    • Nasal congestion
    • Skin irritation, pain, and discomfort
    • Swelling of the face/eyelid
    • Urticaria
    • Worsening of rosacea
    • Dizziness
    • Hypotension
    • Slow heart

    How to use Mirvaso Gel

Mirvaso Gel is easy to use and you should follow the instructions given by your doctor. This gel is usually applied to the face once a day, and you will start on a low dose of 1g that is to be spread evenly across the entire face, this may be gradually increased over time if necessary. Spread a thin layer of the gel over the affected area being sure to avoid the eyes, eyelids, mouth, and the inside of your nose. It’s important that you don’t exceed the dose to prevent side effects or skin irritation. Wash your hands thoroughly after you’ve applied the gel to avoid transferring it to other parts of the body.
