MUSE

MUSE is a medication that’s prescribed for men with erectile dysfunction. It’s never used as a first-line treatment, and is only ever recommended for men who either haven’t responded to oral route treatments or are unable to tolerate the side effects.

MUSE comes in the form of an intra-urethral pellet, which is inserted into the tip of the penis via an applicator. This may cause some discomfort when first using the medicine, but as long as you follow the instructions in the patient information leaflet, any discomfort or pain should be short-lived.

Statistically, 6/10 men achieved results with MUSE where other, more traditional erectile dysfunction treatments had failed.

If you think MUSE might benefit you and treat your erectile dysfunction, make an appointment with your GP to discuss whether it’s the right move for you.

  • MUSE is not a first-line treatment for erectile dysfunction. If you're able to, you should first try oral route medications such as sildenfail (Viagra) or tadalafil (Cialis). Our doctors can only prescribe MUSE to you if your own GP has already prescribed it.
  • MUSE isn't an oral route medication - it is a pellet which is inserted into the urethra. Instructions on how to administer the drug are outlined in the patient information leaflet, which you should read thoroughly before taking any of the medication. However, if you're still unsure of what to do, you should call your GP surgery and book an appointment with a practice nurse or doctor who will be able to show you how to administer MUSE safely.
  • You should always seek urgent medical advice if your erection lasts longer than 4 hours.

What is MUSE?

MUSE stands for medicated urethral system for erections, and is a drug that’s used to treat men with erectile dysfunction.

MUSE contains the ingredient, alprostadil, which is identical to the naturally occurring prostaglandin E1.

MUSE shouldn’t be used as a first-line treatment for erectile dysfunction, as other treatments such as sildenafil and tadalafil should be tried first. MUSE should only be used by men who either can’t tolerate the side effects of oral route erectile dysfunction medications or who haven’t achieved results with them.

MUSE works directly on the penis, as the medication is administered into the urethra at the tip of the penis.

Can I use MUSE?

MUSE shouldn’t be used by those who haven’t tried other methods of gaining or maintaining an erection first. However, unless you have any of the following conditions or complaints, it should be safe for you to use MUSE. You should avoid the medication or consult your doctor first if you have:

Allergic to MUSE
Deformed penis
Penile implant
Peyronie’s disease
Inflammation of penis or urethra
Sickle cell anaemia
Leukaemia
Multiple myeloma
Thrombocythoemia
Polycythaemia
Risk of venous thrombosis
History of long-lasting erections
Advised to avoid sex
Bleeding disorder
Blood-borne diseases
Heart, lung or chest problems
History of mental illness/addiction
Ever had a TIA (mini stroke)

If any of the above conditions apply to you, there might be other alternatives for you to treat your erectile dysfunction. You should discuss this with your doctor and whether it’s safe for you to take MUSE or whether you should explore other avenues.

There are also some medicines that might interact with MUSE, causing potentially dangerous effects. These include:

  • Antihypertensives (for high blood pressure)
  • Anticoagulants (for thinning the blood)
  • Sympathomimietics
  • Vasoactive medicines
  • Decongestants
  • Appetite suppressants
  • Other medicines used to treat erectile dysfunction

If you already take any of the above medicines, please ask your pharmacist or doctor whether it’s safe for you to take MUSE.

Can I use MUSE if my partner is pregnant?

If you’re intending to use MUSE for sex with a pregnant woman, you should wear a condom. This is because the effect of MUSE on an unborn child is as yet unknown. You should ask your doctor whether it’s safe to use without a condom if your partner is breastfeeding, as it’s currently unknown whether any of the medicine will be secreted in breast milk.

What are the side effects of MUSE?

Muse isn’t a medicine to be taken lightly as it can cause some serious side effects. However, not everyone experiences them, and some people only notice a mild discomfort, so try not to let the following list of potential side effects scare you. The most commonly reported side effects are:

Burning feeling in urethra
Pain in penis
Headache
Dizziness
Muscle spasms
Low blood pressure
Bleeding from urethra
Pain in testicles
Burning/itching in partner’s vagina
Bruised penis
Increased erection
Peyronie’s disease

There are more side effects listed in the patient information leaflet, and you should familiarise yourself with all of the possible symptoms you might experience as a result of using MUSE. You should also take into account your partner’s wishes when you consider using MUSE as a treatment, as you need to remember that the medication might also affect them.

Can my partner give me oral sex if I use MUSE?

Muse isn’t meant to be swallowed. If your partner gives you oral sex, they might risk ingesting the medication and becoming ill. For this reason, we strongly advise against unprotected oral sex. If you wish, you may wear a condom during oral sex.

How do you use MUSE?

To make sure that you’re using MUSE correctly, you should thoroughly read the patient information leaflet that comes with it as it contains all of the instructions as well as diagrams. You should read this before you attempt to administer the medicine, and not during. The basic steps for administering MUSE are:

  • 1. Wash your hands thoroughly and dry on a clean towel
  • 2. Urinate before use and shake your penis several times to remove excess urine
  • 3. Stretch your penis gently and slowly to its full length
  • 4. Insert the applicator into the urethra at the tip of the penis
  • 5. Push down the button at the top of the applicator until it stops. Hold in place for 5 seconds
  • 6. Gently move the applicator from side to side to release the pellet
  • 7. Remove the applicator and check that the medication has been dispensed
  • 8. Roll your penis between your hands for 10 seconds, or longer if you feel a burning sensation

You should sit, stand, or walk until your erection develops. Lying down might hinder the full potential of the medication.

What happens if MUSE doesn’t work?

You may need a higher dosage of the medication, in which case, you should go back to your GP to discuss whether this is an option for you.

Will MUSE hurt?

There may be some discomfort when using MUSE due to the nature of where it’s administrated. This is normal, and if you’ve followed the instructions in the patient information leaflet correctly, any pain or discomfort should be short-lived. Your penis might be sensitive after use, but this is normal. If the sensitivity or pain is too much for you to handle, please stop using the medication and talk to your GP about alternative options.
