Nicorette Nasal Spray – 10ml

Nicorette Nasal Spray is an aid to stopping smoking. If you’re struggling to quit smoking, Nicorette Nasal Spray can be used alongside other methods to help reduce your cravings for cigarettes and relieve the withdrawal effects that you may experience when not smoking. When you get a craving, simply spray the Nicorette solution - which contains 0.5mg of nicotine - into the nostrils to curb this craving so you’re less likely to pick up a cigarette. With continued use, the number of sprays you need will reduce as you become less dependent on nicotine, with the goal of eventually becoming nicotine-free unaided.

Please note: Nicorette Nasal Spray is not a substitute for cigarettes. It uses a low dose of nicotine to ease you off cigarettes and help with the withdrawal effects. Nicorette nasal spray is suitable for adults and children over the age of 12 years.

What is Nicorette Nasal Spray and how does it work?

Nicorette Nasal Spray is a type of nicotine replacement therapy, which means it takes the addictive substance of cigarettes known as nicotine, but not the harmful toxins which are responsible for smoking-related illnesses and death. It enables smokers to get their nicotine fix should they crave it, but it is not a substitute for cigarettes and it does not give you the same buzz as a cigarette might. However, with this nasal spray the nicotine can reach the blood much faster to curb your cravings quickly and prevent you from reaching for the cigarettes. While giving up smoking without any aids is better for your health, nicotine replacement therapy is a safe way of helping you through the difficult first few weeks of quitting, and the benefits of this far outweigh the risks of smoking. Smokers are more likely to quit the habit with aids rather than without any help.

Who is Nicorette Nasal Spray suitable for?

Nicorette Nasal Spray is suitable for adults and children over the age of 12, however, the doses and how long you can use this product for may differ between children and adults. Please see the ‘how to use and dosage’ section for more information.

Who should not use this product?

In some circumstances this product may not be suitable and you should speak to your GP or pharmacist for alternative quit smoking aids if any of the following apply to you which means you’re unsuitable to use this type of nicotine replacement therapy. You must not use Nicorette Nasal spray if you are allergic to nicotine or any of the other ingredients in this medicine (please see a full list of ingredients on the patient information leaflet). You should also speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using this product if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, are in hospital due to any type of heart disease, or you have any other health conditions such as a stomach ulcer, liver or kidney disease, overactive thyroid gland, diabetes, or respiratory disease such as asthma.

Can I use Nicorette Nasal Spray if I’m taking other medicines?

Always inform your doctor or pharmacist of any other medicines you may be taking before starting this treatment, particularly if you’re taking theophylline, clozapine, or ropinirole. If you’re unsure whether a medicine you’re taking may interact with this product, or if your health condition could be made worse by using this nasal spray, check the patient information leaflet or ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Can I use Nicorette Nasal Spray if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

Smoking is harmful to your baby or child so it’s important that you don’t smoke if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, and ideally, you should try to give up without these aids. However, if this is easier said than done and you’re struggling to quit you should speak to your doctor about aids that are safe for you and your baby. You may be able to use nicotine replacement therapy such as this nasal spray as this outweighs the risks of smoking.

Nicorette Nasal Spray dosage and how to use the spray

For those who are aged between 12 and 18, do not use this product for more than 12 weeks. Adults 18 and over may use this spray for up to 9 months but you should not use it continuously for longer than 3 months. If you feel you need to use this aid for longer then you should speak to your doctor first. This medicine comes in a 10 ml bottle which produces around 200 sprays, and it contains 0.5 mg of nicotine. You can use the spray whenever you feel the urge to smoke but do not use more than 64 sprays per day. It’s recommended that you should only use one spray in each nostril up to twice in one hour.

The patient information leaflet contains pictures to show you how to use the spray. Before using, remove the protective cap from the nozzle and prime the spray if this is the first time using it or you haven’t used it for 2-3 days. To prime, point the nozzle away from yourself and others and press the nozzle several times until a spray is released. You can then insert the tip of the nozzle into your nostril and point it towards the back of the nose and press down on the nozzle quickly and firmly to release one spray. Repeat the process in the other nozzle. Once done, replace the protective cap and store it appropriately, out of reach of children and out of direct light.

Are there any side effects of Nicorette Nasal Spray?
