Nystan Oral Suspension is a liquid medicine that is taken to treat fungal infections. It can be used to fight fungi which is trying to spread in the mouth, throat and gut and the treatment should be able to clear the infection within in one or two weeks. This medicine can be used by both adults and children.

What is Nystan Oral Suspension?

Nystan is a treatment for fungal infections in the mouth, throat and gut. It is a liquid medicine formally described as an oral suspension. As an antifungal, this treatment is able to weaken and over time remove fungal cells to wipe out all traces of infection. It can also be used to prevent oral thrush in those born of mothers with vaginal thrush. Typically, the treatment should clear a fungal mouth infection within 7-14 days.

How does Nystan Oral Suspension work?

Nystan Oral Suspension contains the ingredient nystatin, which targets fungi and prevents it from producing ergosterol. Without being able to produce this agent, the fungi are unable to continue multiplying and its cell structure starts to weaken. Eventually the body’s natural defence system is able to break down these fungal cells and kill off the infection.

How do I use Nystan Oral Suspension?

The recommended dose for both adults and children is 1ml of suspension dropped into the mouth four times a day. For new-born babies, the dose that’s recommended is a 1ml drop just once a day.

The bottle should be well shaken before use and accurate doses are achieved with the measuring dropper provided. Doses should be equally spaced throughout the day. If you are using this medicine to treat an infection in the mouth or throat, try not to swallow the suspension too quickly, since the medicine will work better the longer it is in contact with the site of the infection. If you’re ever unsure about the best way to use this medicine, then you can check your product’s information leaflet or contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

What are the side effects of Nystan Oral Suspension?

When taking large oral doses of this medicine, it is possible that on occasions this can cause the following:

  • Bloating
  • Stomach cramps and indigestion
  • Sickness and diarrhoea

In rare cases, Nystan Oral Suspension has been reported to cause an itchy rash, hypersensitivity and swelling around the lips or tongue (angioedema) or face (facial oedema). In very rare cases, a serious allergic reaction called Steven-Johnson Syndrome has been reported (causing blistering of the skin, mouth, eyes and genitals). If you experience any side effects that cause particular concern, contact your doctor as soon as possible. If irritation develops while taking this medicine, then the treatment should be stopped and you should contact your doctor for advice on the next steps.

Can I take Nystan Oral Suspension?

Nystan Oral Suspension should be fine to use for adults and children of all ages, but there are certain precautions that may need to be taken depending on your health and other circumstances. This treatment is not meant for fungal infections in the lungs or on the skin (systemic mycoses), so you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist if your issue is in these areas.

You should also speak to your doctor prior to taking Nystan Oral Suspension if any of the following apply to you:

  • You are currently or have recently taken other medicines
  • You’re pregnant, breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or planning to have a baby
  • A doctor has previously informed you that you have an intolerance to some sugars

What if I take too much Nystan?

Taking more Nystan Oral Suspension than recommended is unlikely to cause any severe effects because the amount of medication absorbed by the body is very small. In very high doses, however, nausea and gastrointestinal upset are possibilities. If a child of yours takes a much higher dosage of this medicine than recommended, then you may be best contacting your doctor or your local hospital emergency department.

What if I forget to take Nystan?

If you forget to take this oral suspension at any time, then take it as soon as you remember, unless it is close to the time you’d normally take your next dose. If this is the case, then just skip the forgotten dose and continue on like normal after the next scheduled one. It is never a good idea to take a double dose to make up for a forgotten one.
