What is Nytol-One-A-Night?

Nytol One-A-Night tablets are a medication taken as a sleeping aid. A key ingredient in this medicine is often used to treat allergic responses and reactions, but it can also be used to induce sleep in a patient due to the way it affects brain activity. When taken as instructed, Nytol One-A-Night can help a patient improve the amount of sleep they get, and this change should encourage various other improvements both physically and psychologically.

How does Nytol One-A-Night work?

Nytol One-A-Night contains Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride, which is an antihistamine. As the name suggests, this medication inhibits histamine which is a neurotransmitter mainly related to immune responses. That is why the treatment is often used to treat allergies, which the immune system may respond to in a severe and disruptive manner.

However, another significant thing about this antihistamine is that the neurotransmitter it alters is also related to the sleep-wake cycle in the brain. Antihistamines generally sedate neural responses which slows down activity in the brain. Because of all this, this medication is not only able to treat allergies but can also induce drowsiness or sleep. It can also encourage a longer and deeper sleep then what has been experienced recently, leading the patient to feel more rested in the morning.

How do I take Nytol One-A-Night?

The recommended dosage is to swallow one tablet with water around 20 minutes before you go to bed. These tablets should take effect pretty fast once taken, which is why it’s best to use them so soon before bedtime.

These tablets are not meant to be taken if you wake up during the night and they should not be used for than 2 weeks without consulting a doctor first. Continuous use of this medication can lead to it becoming less effective. Avoid driving or operating machinery when you have recently taken Nytol One-A-Night.

What are the side effects of Nytol One-A-Night?

Like with all medicines, it is possible that Nytol One-A-Night can cause side effects, but not all patients will experience any and most of the potential ones are a rarity. The most commonly reported side effects associated with these tablets include the following:

  • Tiredness
  • Drowsiness
  • Reduced attention
  • Unsteadiness
  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth

In rare cases, this medication has been reported to cause nausea, muscle twitching and an allergic reaction (usually indicated by a rash, swelling and/or shortness of breath). If you experience any side effects that are particularly troubling or prolonged, then contact your doctor or nearest hospital emergency department as soon as possible.

Can I use Nytol One-A-Night?

Before you start using Nytol One-A-Night, it’s important to check that there are no circumstances regarding your health which could mean it’s actually best to avoid this treatment. For instance, you should avoid using this medication if you have an obstruction in your stomach or gut, such as an ulcer. These tablets are also not meant to be used by children aged below 16 or the elderly with confusion.

As a precaution, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Nytol One-A-Night if any of the following apply to you:

  • You have asthma, bronchitis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • You have narrow-angle glaucoma
  • You have an enlarged prostate or urinary retention
  • You have moderate to severe liver or kidney disease
  • You have epilepsy, seizure disorders or myasthenia gravis
  • You are pregnant, breastfeeding or think you may be pregnant
  • You have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars (this medication contains lactose)

It’s also worth speaking to your doctor or pharmacist about any other medicines you are currently taking before you start using Nytol One-A-Night. It’s particularly important to highlight if you are taking any of these types of medicine:

  • Tricyclic antidepressants
  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs prescribed for depression)
  • Atropine (Taken to dilate pupils of the eyes)
  • Any other antihistamines or other medicines that can cause drowsiness. Avoid taking other antihistamines (including those used on the skin and in cold and cough medicines) while using Nytol One-A-Night

What if I take too much Nytol One-A-Night?

If you accidentally take more of this medication then instructed, then contact your doctor or nearest casualty department straight away. It will be more likely that you could experience side effects associated with this treatment.

What if I forget to take Nytol One-A-Night?

If you forget to take a dose of this medication, then simply skip it and take the next one due at the usual time. You should not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
