Onglyza

Onglyza is a prescription medication used in the treatment of adult type 2 diabetics above the age of 18. Type 2 diabetes is a condition that affects the level of blood sugar in the body, in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes there is too much blood sugar because of a lack of insulin production and too much glucose. Type 2 diabetes usually develops in adulthood as a result of an unhealthy lifestyle of being inactive and overweight. Diabetes is a long term condition that needs to be controlled to prevent life-threatening complications such as hearts attacks and strokes.

Medication is usually prescribed to control type 2 diabetes, if diet and exercise alone are not effective, and blood sugar levels are too high. Onglyza contains the active ingredient, saxagliptin, which belongs to a group of medicines known as oral antidiabetics.

How does Onglyza work?

Onglyza helps the body to naturally control blood sugar. Saxagliptin, the active ingredient, does this by lowering the amount of sugar released by the liver and increasing levels of insulin production at times when there are spikes in blood sugar levels such as after meals. It’s normal for blood sugar to spike slightly after eating, but for people with diabetes this can be dangerous particularly if the levels spike too high. Onglyza helps to control these spikes to avoid complications such as hyperglycaemia which is when blood sugar levels become too high.

Who is Onglyza suitable for?

Onglyza is suitable for adult type 2 diabetics only and cannot treat type 1 diabetes or ketoacidosis. It is suitable for those who have regular spikes in blood sugar after meals as this medication can lower levels during this time. Onglyza is also suitable for those who are also exercising and eating healthily to help control their diabetes.

Who is Onglyza not suitable for?

Not everyone is suitable for this type of antidiabetic. There are a number of reasons why this medication is not suitable for some people, usually because of an existing health condition that may be affected by this medication, or if you’re taking other medication that may interact with Onglyza. If you’re taking other medication, have an existing health condition, or are pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding, you should consult a GP before taking Onglyza.

Onglyza and pregnancy

Onglyza is not recommended for those who are pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant or are breastfeeding. It has not been deemed safe to take this medication during pregnancy and this should be avoided. It has also not been established whether this medication transfers through breast milk and therefore you should not take Onglyza if you want to breastfeed. If you fall pregnant whilst taking this medication you should consult your GP immediately.

Onglyza and health conditions

Your general health should be considered before taking this medication. If you have a health condition other than diabetes, there is a risk Onglyza may worsen some conditions. Onglyza is not suitable for you if you have type 1 diabetes, ketoacidosis, disease of the pancreas, heart failure and liver/kidney problems such as reduced kidney function. You should also not take this medication if you have a condition that lowers your immune system such as AIDS.

Onglyza and other medications

There are some medications which may interact with Onglyza and therefore it’s important to tell a doctor if you are currently taking any other medication before starting Onglyza. Onglyza can be taken alone, or with insulin or another antidiabetic medication, however, if the medicine is sulphonylurea the dose may need to be lowered if used with Onglyza.

Some medications with certain active ingredients may not be suitable to take alongside Onglyza. These include substances which control seizures or chronic pain such as carbamazepine, phenobarbital or phenytoin. You will also need to inform your doctor if you’re taking the steroid medicine, dexamethasone, the antibiotic, rifampicin, the blood pressure medicine, diltiazem, and a treatment for fungal infections known as ketoconazole.

How to take Onglyza

A doctor will prescribe your dose based on your condition, you may need a higher dose if your condition is severe. The recommended dose is 5mg once a day, although this may be lower if you’re taking any other medication or if you have reduced kidney function. It’s important that you do not exceed the recommended dose, even if you have missed a tablet.

What are the side effects of Onglyza?

All medications have side effects, and some side effects are more common than others. Common side effects of Onglyza may affect up to 1 in 10 people.
