What is Opticrom and how does it work?

Opticrom is specially formulated to treat eye allergies in adults and children. It contains the active ingredient sodium cromoglicate to reduce irritation, swelling, redness, and itchiness of the eyes that is most commonly caused by seasonal allergic conjunctivitis or hay fever, it may also be used to treat perennial allergic conjunctivitis which can develop at any time of the year. The active ingredient in this medicine works to relieve the symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis by stopping the body’s overreaction to harmless substances such as pollen. It does this by preventing the release of a chemical known as histamine which is responsible for the inflammation and other allergy symptoms. By calming the body’s allergic response, symptoms can be kept under control.

Who are Opticrom eye drops suitable for?

Opticrom eye drops are suitable for most adults and children from the age of 6 years. If you’re struggling with itchy, watery, red and swollen eyes that are caused by an allergy to pollen or other substances such as dust, animal hair, cosmetics, etc, then Opticrom is a suitable treatment to help reduce these symptoms.

Who should not use these eye drops?

Not everyone will be suitable to use Opticrom, in particular those who have an allergy to this product. You must not use this product if you are allergic to sodium cromoglicate or any of the other ingredients in this medicine, refer to the patient information leaflet for details on what is included in this medicine. This product should also not be used by children under the age of 6 years.

With any new medicine that you’re taking always inform a doctor or pharmacist of any medical conditions you have before using these drops, or if you’re taking any other medicines. This is to ensure there isn’t a risk of the drugs interacting with each other and causing side effects.

Can I use these eye drops while pregnant or breastfeeding?

You may still need to control your allergy symptoms during pregnancy or breastfeeding, however, you must always seek the advice of a medical professional to ensure that this medicine is safe for you and your unborn baby or infant. Do not use Opticrom eye drops unless it has been recommended by your doctor or pharmacist.

How to use Opticrom allergy eye drops

The recommended dose of this medicine is 1 or 2 drops in each eye four times a day.

Before using this product:

  • Remove contact lenses if you wear them and wait at least 15 minutes after using the eye drops before putting your contact lenses back in
  • Make sure your hands are thoroughly clean by washing them with soap and water

Using the eye drops:

Firstly, break off one single-dose container from the strip and use the container as soon as you’ve opened it, throw it away after you’ve used it and do not use it again. As it is preservative-free it must be used as soon as it has been opened. To make sure the medicine goes directly into your eye, tilt your head back and pull down your lower eyelid. Aim the product close to the eye and squeeze the drops inside the eyelid, taking care not to touch the eye with the container. You should then close your eyes and wipe away any excess liquid from around the eyes with a clean tissue. Finally, wash your hands again when finished so that you don’t spread the solution to other parts of the body.

Are there any side effects of this medicine?

Like all medicines, you may develop some side effects but it’s quite unlikely. Immediately after using the drops, you may experience blurred vision or a stinging or burning feeling in the eyes, but this should go away in a short while. Other side effects include mild eye irritation or in rare cases a severe allergic reaction with symptoms such as worsening of eye irritation, a rash, problems with swallowing, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue. If an allergic reaction occurs stop using the drop immediately and seek medical help straight away.
