What is Ovex and how does it work?

Ovex contains mebendazole which is a type of medicine known as an anthelmintic and it is used to treat infections of the gut caused by worms. It is primarily used to treat a common form of worms known as threadworm, it may also be referred to as ‘pinworm’. When threadworms infect the human body they live in the gut and lay their eggs around the anus and this causes itching and discomfort around the anus. They usually come out at night and the itching can cause insomnia, irritability, and bedwetting.

Threadworms can affect both adults and children and they’re not usually serious but they do need to be treated promptly, fortunately, there is an effective treatment in the form of mebendazole. This medicine kills the worms by stopping them from using their vital energy supply - glucose. Without glucose, the worms will quickly die and they will be expelled out of your gut via your stools. Mebendazole starts to work straight away to kill the worms but it doesn’t kill the eggs so it’s important to follow your doctor’s or pharmacist’s instructions and continue with treatment to prevent reinfection. Taking mebendazole alongside having good personal hygiene will help to clear the infection, stop the spread, and prevent reinfection.

Why do I need a family pack of Ovex?

When an outbreak of threadworms occurs in the home it’s important that the whole family is treated at the same time to stop reinfection. Even if you are the only person with symptoms, if you live with other people it’s wise that everyone gets treated to stop the spread of threadworms. Ovex Family Pack contains four single tablets and one single tablet should be taken per person.

Who is Ovex treatment suitable for?

Ovex is suitable for adults and children over the age of two who have a worm infection, it is not recommended for children under the age of two. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you’re concerned about taking this medicine if you have any other medical condition.

Who should not take an Ovex tablet?

You should not take this medicine if you’re allergic to any of the ingredients in this medicine or if you’ve had an allergic reaction in the past to this medicine or a similar medicine. Allergy reactions can be serious so it’s important to avoid this medicine if you’re aware of an allergy to it.

Ovex tablets are also unsuitable if you’re taking other medicines such as metronidazole and cimetidine. Do not take Ovex with these medicines and speak to your doctor or pharmacist about any other medicines you may be taking before starting Ovex treatment.

Can I take this medicine while I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

Ovex or mebendazole is not suitable if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Speak to your doctor about treating worms while pregnant or breastfeeding.

Ovex side effects

All medicines have side effects, however, not everyone who takes this medicine will experience them. The most common side effect associated with Ovex which affects around 1 in 10 people is stomach pain, you can alleviate this by placing a covered hot water bottle or heat pad on your stomach and getting lots of rest. Less common side effects may include stomach discomfort with bloating and wind, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. In rare cases, unusual hair loss, dizziness, liver problems, and blisters on the skin, mouth, eyes, or genitals have been reported.

Serious allergic reaction can occur in a small number of cases and it’s important to be aware of the signs as it could potentially be life-threatening. Symptoms of an allergic reaction to mebendazole or to the other ingredients in this medicine include:

  • A skin rash with blistering or peeling
  • Wheezing
  • Difficulty breathing or talking
  • Tightness in the chest or throat
  • Swellng of the face, mouth, lips, tongue, or throat

How do you take Ovex tablets?

Depending on the type of worm infection you have, your doctor will tell you what dose to take and how long you should take it for. Threadworms are usually treated with one single dose which will kill the worms but you may need to take a second dose two weeks later to kill the eggs and prevent becoming infected again. As well as yourself, other people in your household will need to be treated even if they don’t have symptoms as threadworms can spread easily. One Ovex tablet should be taken per family member.

Ovex tablets can be chewed or swallowed whole but it’s best to crush the tablet before giving it to a child and always supervise children while they take the tablet.
