What is Paramax?

Paramax is a medication which can be prescribed to adults to treat symptoms of a migraine. This treatment is available in the form of either tablets and sachets. It contains two active ingredients – paracetamol 500mg and metoclopramide hydrochloride 5mg.

How does Paramax work?

The active ingredients contained in Paramax focus on different areas of the body which can be disturbed whenever a patient is experiencing a migraine.

Metoclopramide hydrochloride, which is classed as an antiemetic, works on muscles in the upper part of the digestive system which causes your stomach to empty. It also affects certain parts of your brain to stop you from feeling sick (nausea) and prevents any urges to vomit, which can otherwise easily occur when you have a migraine.

Paramax also contains paracetamol which is part of a group of medicines called painkillers (analgesics). Paracetamol prevents substances that naturally occur in your body called prostaglandins from being made. These substances cause pain in certain scenarios, including when you have a migraine, so by taking Paramax you can reduce the pain that’s usually experienced.

Am I ok to take Paramax?

If you are experiencing migraine symptoms, then you may be prescribed Paramax to treat them. However, in certain circumstances, this medication may not be suitable for you to take or extra precautions may prove necessary.

You should NOT use Paramax if any of the following apply to you:

  • You are under the age of 18
  • You have epilepsy
  • You have a tumour on the adrenal gland (known as pheochromocytoma)
  • You are experiencing a blockage or bleeding in your stomach or intestine (gut)
  • You have had movements that you cannot control (mainly of the tongue, mouth, jaw, arms and legs) after taking metoclopramide or medicines used to calm emotional and mental problems
  • You have recently had an operation on your stomach or intestine (gut). Do not take Paramax during the first 3-4 days after your operation
  • You are in the first six months of pregnancy (speak to your doctor if you have been pregnant for over six months and avoid breast-feeding if you are taking Paramax)
  • You are taking any other medicines which contain paracetamol
  • You are taking a medicine called Levodopa (used to treat Parkinson’s disease)

You will need to take special care using Paramax if you are elderly (aged 65 or above), have severe kidney problems or you have severe liver problems caused by alcohol. Speak to your doctor or local pharmacist for advice if any of these factors apply to you.

Other medicines can affect the way Paramax works if they are taken at the same time. As mentioned earlier, you should not use Paramax if you are currently taking Levodopa or any medication which contains paracetamol. Other medications besides these could clash with the effects of Paramax. Tell your doctor about other medications you are currently using before you use Paramax, especially if you are taking any of the following:

  • Medicines to calm or reduce anxiety (hypnotics or anxiolytics)
  • Medicines to help you sleep (sedatives or barbiturates)
  • Antipsychotics (taken for mental illness)
  • Certain medicines used for treating depression (such as mirtazapine or trazodone)
  • Medicines to prevent blood clotting (such as warfarin)
  • Certain medicines used to treat moderate or severe pain (such as codeine, dihydrocodeine or dextropropoxyphene
  • Medicines known as sedative antihistamines which treat hay fever or rashes and which can make you sleepy (examples include promethazine and chlorphenamine)
  • Chloramphenicol (taken for infections)
  • Ciclosporin (taken to prevent rejection of transplants)
  • Clonidine (taken for treating high blood pressure, migraines or hot flushes in the menopause)
  • Digoxin (taken for heart problems)
  • Domperidone (taken to stop nausea or vomiting)

Paramax dosage instructions

The usual dose when using Paramax is to take 2 tablets or sachets when you have the first warning of a migraine attack. You should wait at least 4 hours before taking another dose. Do not take more than 6 tablets/sachets in any 24-hour period.

If you think the effects of this medicine are proving too weak or too strong, then consult your doctor but do not change the dose you take before this discussion. Tell your doctor if you are continuing to be sick (vomiting) even after taking this medication.

Paramax side effects

Like with all medicines, there is a possibility that Paramax could cause side effects, but not everybody gets them. In fact, it is not common for people to get any side effects after using Paramax, but some of the possible ones that could occur include the following:

  • Loss of menstrual periods
  • Abnormal production of breast milk in both women and men
  • Breast enlargement in men
  • Anxiousness, restlessness or confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Lack or loss of strength
  • Skin rash

You should speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away if you experience any of these side effects for a prolonged period of time. You should also stop taking this medication and contact your doctor or nearest hospital emergency department if you experience any rare side effects which are really serious or last an unusually long time. If you have any concerns about how this medicine works or how it’s affecting you, contact your doctor as soon as possible.

What if I take too much Paramax?

If you take more Paramax than you are supposed to, you should contact your doctor or nearest hospital emergency department as soon as possible. When seeing a doctor in person, take any remaining medication and the pack with you.

There are certain side effects which could be experienced if you take more Paramax than you should. These include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, severe stomach pains, swollen limbs and an uneven heartbeat.
