What is Pepto-Bismol and how does it work?

Pepto-Bismol is a medicine used to provide relief from heartburn, indigestion, and stomach upset. It is available in tablet or liquid form and is also under the brand name, Pepti-Calm. Pepto-Bismol contains the active ingredient, bismuth subsalicylate which relieves heartburn and acid reflux, indigestion, diarrhoea, and nausea. It does this by forming a coating over the stomach and the lower part of the oesophagus to protect them from stomach acid. This medicine is also a mild antacid so it can help to reduce excess stomach acid which reduces the risk of heartburn and acid reflux occurring.

How long do Pepto-Bismol chewable tablets take to work?

After taking Pepto-Bismol chewable tablets the medicine will get to work and relieve your symptoms within 30 to 60 minutes. You can take the tablets when you need to but do not exceed the recommended dose.

Pepto-Bismol dosage and how to take

Pepto-Bismol chewable tablets can be taken by adults and adolescents over 16 years whenever heartburn or indigestion needs to be relieved. The recommended dose is two tablets when needed and these tablets should be chewed or left to dissolve on your tongue. You may repeat this dose every 30-60 minutes if necessary but you must not take more than 8 doses in 24 hours. Pepto-Bismol tablets shouldn’t be taken for longer than two days but if your symptoms are still persistent after this time, speak to your GP.

Who should avoid taking this medicine?

Some people are unsuitable to take Pepto-Bismol in any form because of certain medical conditions or other medications that may interact with the ingredients in this medicine. Do not take Pepto-Bismol chewable tablets if any of the following applying to you:

  • You are under the age of 16
  • You are allergic to salicylates including aspirin or any of the other ingredients in this medicine
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You are taking other salicylates such as aspirin

Speak to your doctor before taking this medicine if you have conditions such as gout, diabetes, or a blood clotting disorder to check if it is safe for you to take.

Is it safe to take Pepto-Bismol tablets with other medicines?

Always inform your doctor or pharmacist about any other medicines you’re taking before you start this treatment, this includes vitamins and herbal remedies. Pepto-Bismol shouldn’t be taken with blood thinners such as warfarin, medicines for diabetes or gout, or tetracycline antibiotics such as doxycycline and minocycline. Speak to your doctor if you’re taking these antibiotic and need to take Pepto-Bismol, you may need to leave a 2-hour gap between taking the medicines.

Is this medicine safe to take while pregnant or breastfeeding?

This medicine is not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Heartburn and indigestion are common in pregnancy but it’s best to treat this with natural remedies as this is safer than taking medicine. Try eating smaller meals more often rather than three large meals and avoid eating foods that are fatty or spicy. If you’re experiencing heartburn at night, raise your head up slightly so it is higher than your stomach, this will stop stomach acid rising up through your oesophagus and take the pressure off your stomach. If natural remedies aren’t working, speak to your GP about safe medicines to take while pregnant or breastfeeding.

Pepto-Bismol side effects

Pepto-Bismol does have some side effects, as is the case with all medicines. It’s common to experience your tongue and stools turning dark in colour, this is a harmless and temporary side effect and you shouldn’t be alarmed as it will return to normal several days after stopping treatment. It happens simply because the active ingredient bismuth comes into contact with sulfur in your saliva and digestive system and forms a substance known as bismuth sulfide which is black in colour. If it has been more than 3 days and this side effect is still present then you should see your doctor.

This medicine contains aspartame and amaranth which is a type of colouring and it can cause a reaction in some people which in some cases can be severe. If you’re experiencing signs of a severe allergic reaction such as a skin rash that may be blistering or peeling or wheezing, difficulty breathing or talking, or swelling of the face, mouth, lips, or throat, call 999 or got to your nearest A&E department immediately.
