Pepto-Bismol Liquid Suspension

Pepto-Bismol is a stomach medicine which can be taken to treat symptoms such as acid reflux, heartburn, diarrhoea and nausea. Pepto-Bismol is available as an oral liquid suspension which has a distinctive pink appearance. This medicine is alternatively available as chewable tablets.

The active ingredient contained in Pepto-Bismol is bismuth subsalicylate. This mineral has the ability to reduce excess stomach acid and other substances which can be disruptive to the stomach and the lower part of your food pipe. Pepto-bismol is only recommended for use for a two-day period, so it is therefore meant for treating occasional periods when an upset stomach or related symptoms occur.

Pepto Bismol liquid uk

Pepto-Bismol is a medicine which is available as an oral liquid suspension and in the form of tablets as well. It can treat conditions related to the digestive system including acid reflux, heartburn, indigestion, diarrhoea and nausea. The treatment essentially protects your stomach and the lower part of your food pipe from excessive stomach acid and any discomfort.

The liquid/oral suspension version of pepto bismol has a bright and distinct pink appearance. This medicine is also sold under another brand name called Pepti-Calm.

How does Pepto-Bismol liquid work?

Pepto-Bismol liquid suspension contains a medicine called bismuth subsalicylate. It comes from the same class of medicines as aspirin and it has antibacterial, antidiarrheal and antacid effects.

When you drink this medicine, the contents form a protective and soothing coating on the inside of your stomach and the lower part of your food pipe. In addition to reducing any inflammation or intestinal spasms, this treatment can also reduce excess levels of stomach acid and any disease-causing bacteria or viruses which may be present. It can also increase the amount of fluid that is absorbed in the intestines, therefore firming up stools.

Because of what it can do, patients may choose to take pepto-bismol if they are experiencing any of the following symptoms (or multiple at once):

  • Acid reflux
  • Heartburn
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Upset stomach
  • Excessive intestinal gas
  • Excessive burping
  • A feeling of fullness due to eating too much

Who can and cannot use Pepto-Bismol?

Pepto-bismol can be used by most people aged 16 and above. It can be taken when needed as a method of treating occasional bouts of heartburn, indigestion or similar issues.

This treatment (in either liquid or tablet form) should NOT be taken by anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding. Other factors can also make pepto-bismol unsuitable to use. You should seek alternative treatment if any of the following applies to you:

  • You have an allergy to amaranth and aspartame
  • You have a blood clotting problem
  • You have diabetes
  • You have gout
  • You have a rare inherited illness called phenylketonuria

Taking Pepto-Bismol alongside other medicines

There are certain medicines which could be interfered with if they are taken at the same time as Pepto-Bismol. Therefore, if you are considering using this treatment, you should tell your doctor or local pharmacist about any other medicines you are currently using.

It’s particularly important to highlight the following medicines if you are taking any of these:

  • Blood thinners (anticoagulants)
  • Any medicines which treat diabetes
  • Any medicines which treat gout
  • Doxycycline, minocycline or any other tetracycline antibiotics (you need to leave at least a 2-hour gap between taking tetracycline antibiotics and Pepto-Bismol).
  • Any painkillers apart from paracetamol (paracetamol and Pepto-Bismol are safe to take at the same time. Other pain relief medicines, like ibuprofen and aspirin, should not be taken alongside Pepto-Bismol without checking with your doctor or pharmacist first).

Pepto bismol dosage

Shake the bottle of Pepto-Bismol liquid well before using it. Pour a single 30ml dose in the provided cup and swallow. If necessary, repeat the dose every 30 to 60 minutes, but do not take more than 8 doses in 24 hours. You can take Pepto-Bismol either with or without food. If diarrhoea is one of the symptoms you’re treating with this medicine, make sure to drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

Do not take pepto-bismol for more than 2 days. If your symptoms have not improved after 2 days of using this treatment, speak to your doctor about this.

How long does it take for Pepto-Bismol liquid to work?

When you take this medicine, it should work within 30-60 minutes. If you feel it’s necessary, you can take another dose of this liquid 30-60 minutes after the previous one, but remember not to take more than 8 in total within 24 hours.

Can Pepto Bismol cause side effects?

Like with other medicines, it is possible that side effects could occur as a result of taking Pipto-Bismol. It is common for this treatment to cause your tongue or stools to turn dark in colour. This is a harmless and temporary side effect so you should not be alarmed if it happens to you.

This side effect can happen when the bismuth in this medicine comes into contact with small amounts of sulphur within your saliva and digestive system. If this side effect does occur, it usually disappears soon after you stop taking this medicine. If, however, this side effect lasts for more than 3 days (or well after you’ve stopped taking Pepto-Bismol), then tell your doctor or local pharmacist about this. You should also report any other side effects which occur that prove bothersome or refuse to go away.
