Permethrin (Lyclear) 5% Cream - 30g

Permethrin cream is a treatment used on the body to treat scabies or crab lice. Scabies mites are contagious parasites which can latch on to the skin to reproduce and lay eggs and cause painful and itchy rashes as a result. Permethrin cream can be applied to the body and remove an infestation of scabies mites after at least 8 hours. Permethrin cream, which is also available under the brand name Lyclear, can be used on both adults and children and it usually only needs to be applied once to provide full, successful treatment.

Permethrin for scabies treatment

Permethrin cream (also sold under the brand name Lyclear) is a medicinal treatment used against infestations of scabies and crab lice on the body. The type of mites which can cause scabies can live on human skin for months and cause unpleasant symptoms such as itchy, red rashes. On top of that, the condition is contagious too, so it’s important to get on top of the issue as soon as possible. Scabies can be treated effectively with an anti-parasitic medicinal cream like permethrin, which can clear an infestation at least 8 hours after it has been applied.

How does Permethrin cream work?

Permethrin is part of a group of insecticide medicines called pyrethroids. What this essentially means is that the ingredients contained with this medicine are able to affect any insects it comes into contact with. If the mites which cause scabies (known as Sarcoptes scabiei) or crab lice are exposed to permethrin, they become paralysed and are eventually eliminated. While permethrin is toxic to insects, it is much less toxic to people, since our bodies are able to break down the substance in a much quicker fashion.

Because of its effect on insects, permethrin is also used in insect repellent products (such as sprays) which are designed to protect people from mosquitoes. This particular cream though is focused on providing treatment against mites which cause scabies and crab lice.

Who can use Permethrin cream?

If you are looking for treatment against scabies or crab lice on the body, then you are likely to be safe using permethrin cream. There are some circumstances where caution may be needed however. You should consult a doctor or your local pharmacist about whether it’s safe for you to use permethrin cream if any of the following applies to you:

  • You are currently using or have recently used any other medicines. It is not recommended that you use corticosteroids to treat skin conditions like eczema when permethrin is being used
  • You are known to be allergic to chrysanthemums or other compositae
  • You have asthma or eczema
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding

If you are intending to use this medication to treat an infant, then it should only be given under close medical supervision. Permethrin should not be used on newborns or infants less than 2 months of age (unless your doctor advises you to do so).

How do I use Permethrin cream?

Apply the cream to the skin when it is clean, dry and cool. Avoid taking a hot bath or shower just before using this treatment. A thin layer of the cream should be applied to the skin. You should rub the cream into the skin until you can’t see it anymore. Be sure to use enough cream to cover the entire body except your head and face. Pay careful attention to areas such as between the fingers and toes plus under the nails and armpits.

For adults and children aged over 12, one 30g tube of this cream is usually sufficient to cover the entire body. For children aged 6-12, half a tube (15g) is usually enough, while a quarter of a tube (7.5g) should be enough to cover children aged 1-5.

Leave the cream in place for at least 8 hours. Avoid bathing, showering or washing during this period. If you do have to wash a part of your body during this period, then reapply the cream to the affected area.

Provided the instructions for use are followed, a single application of this cream should be enough to successfully remove parasitic insects from your body. Wash off the treatment with soap and water within 12 hours of application.

Does Permethrin cream cause side effects?

Like with other medicines, there is the possibility that permethrin cream can create side effects, but not everyone who uses this treatment will experience them. The most commonly reported side effects linked to permethrin cream are sensations on the skin such as itching, reddening, tingling, pricking, dry skin and skin burning sensations. However, these symptoms may be occurring due to the condition which is being treated, rather than being caused by the medicine.

There is some possibility that post-scabies eczema, which causes itching and a skin rash, could occur for up to four weeks after treatment has ended. This is caused by a reaction to the killed scabies mites. Speak to your doctor if you have the impression that the infestation persists even after treatment.

Other side effects can be caused by permethrin cream but they are rarely reported. If you experience any severe symptoms which indicate you have had an allergic reaction to this medicine, then contact your doctor or nearest hospital emergency department as soon as possible.

How should I store this cream?

Permethrin cream should be stored in a cool and dry place which is below 25 degrees centigrade. This medicine should never be frozen and it should not be used if the expiry date on it has passed. The expiry date is stated on the carton after “Exp”.

How is my order shipped to me?

When an order is ready for shipping, it is collected and delivered by either the Royal Mail or DPD depending on your preference (or possibly your location or the item you ordered).
