Phillips Milk of Magnesia Liquid

Milk of Magnesia is a liquid medicine which can treat conditions related to the digestive system such as acid reflux, indigestion and heartburn and it can also work as a laxative to treat constipation. Containing magnesium hydroxide, Milk of Magnesia is a mint-flavoured oral suspension which can be used by either adults or children (aged 3 and above) as a short-term treatment. This medicine is able to work as both an antacid and as a laxative because the magnesium within it is able to reduce stomach acid and increase water in intestines, which can encourage bowel movements.

Milk of Magnesia uses

Phillips’ Milk of Magnesia liquid is a mint-flavoured oral suspension which can be taken to relieve symptoms which affect the stomach and other parts of the digestive system. It is predominantly taken to treat acid reflux, indigestion, heartburn and stomach discomfort. It may also be used as a laxative to treat constipation.

Milk of Magnesia ingredients

Milk of Magnesia contains magnesium hydroxide as its main ingredient. Magnesium is a naturally occurring mineral which the human body makes use of to help many of its systems function properly.

Treatments which commonly make use of magnesium hydroxide include antacids, which are capable of neutralising stomach acidity, as well as laxatives, which are used to loosen stools and increase bowel movements. Because of what it contains, Milk of Magnesia can serve well as either an antacid or as a laxative.

What to know before taking Milk of Magnesia

If you are considering using Milk of Magnesia to treat a problem related to the digestive system, such as acid reflux, then of course you’ll want to be sure it’s ok for you to use (or your child if they are the one receiving treatment). Milk of Magnesia can be given to adults and children aged 3 or above. Do not give this treatment to children below the age of 3 unless your doctor advises it is ok to do so.

You should not take Milk of Magnesia to treat an acute gastrointestinal condition caused by an infection/disease.

As a precaution, consult your doctor or local pharmacist before using Milk of Magnesia if any of the following apply to you:

  • You have a problem with your kidneys
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You are taking (or have recently used) any other medicines

If you are using (or have recently used) other medicines, then you should provide details to your doctor/pharmacist about them. Some medicines can have their effects disrupted by magnesium hydroxide or the opposite can occur with certain other medicines. Because of this, it’s particularly important to seek advice about using Milk of Magnesia if you are taking any of the following:

  • Any medicines which treat bacterial or fungal infections (examples include itraconazole, cefpodoxime and tetracyclines)
  • Any medicines which treat viral infections (such as atazanavir or tipranavir)
  • Any medicines which treat malaria (such as chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine)
  • Antiepileptics (such as gabapentin or phenytoin)
  • Antipsychotics (such as sulpiride or phenothiazines)
  • Bisphosphonates (such as alendronate or clodronate)
  • Corticosteroids (such as deflazacort or dexamethasone)
  • Iron preparations
  • Cimetidine
  • Dicoumarol
  • Digoxin
  • Dipyridamole
  • Fexofenadine
  • Ibuprofen
  • Levothyroxine
  • Mycophenolate
  • Penicillamine
  • Rosuvastatin
  • Sodium polystyrene sulfonate

This product comes with a dosing cup to allow you to take accurate doses with ease. Shake the bottle well before each use of this medicine. You can take this treatment with either water or milk if you wish. Drink plenty of fluid during the course of your treatment.

The following dosage instructions are for adults only. If you are using Milk of Magnesia as an antacid to treat digestive problems (including acid reflux, indigestion, excess wind, heartburn and stomach discomfort), then take one or two 5ml spoonfuls.
