What is Pirinase nasal spray?

Pirinase is a medicated solution that is sprayed into the nose to reduce swelling and irritation. This can help to relieve symptoms associated with being exposed to an allergen such as pollen and dust. Pirinase can help relieve the symptoms of hay fever, dust mite, pet, and mould spore allergies. Pirinase nasal spray helps to relieve sneezing, runny, itchy, and blocked nose, as well as itchy, watery eyes - all of which are characteristic of many allergic reactions.

How does Pirinase work?

Pirinase contains an active ingredient known as fluticasone propionate which is a corticosteroid. Fluticasone is a man-made version of a corticosteroid-like hormone that is naturally produced in the body by the adrenal glands, this is known as cortisol. One of the main functions of cortisol is immune response and inflammation. Inflammation is an immune response to certain allergens, corticosteroids are anti-inflammatory and when sprayed into the nose, swelling in the nasal passage is reduced and this eases the irritating symptoms that occur when you’re exposed to an allergen such as sneezing and itchy nose. It also works to relieve irritated eyes as well as the nose.

Who is Pirinase nasal spray suitable for?

This medication is suitable for adults over the age of 18 years who are struggling with allergy-related symptoms.

Who should not take this medication?

There are a number of people who may not be suitable for this type of medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical condition or are taking other medication before you take Pirinase.

You must not use this nasal spray if you are allergic to fluticasone or any other ingredient in this medicine, or if you are under the age of 18 years old. You should also speak to your doctor before taking this medicine if you have an infection in your nose or sinuses, or if you have an injury or ulcers in your nose. The same applies if you’ve recently had surgery in your nose, or you have a high temperature.

Can I use this nasal spray while taking other medication?

Your doctor or pharmacist can tell you whether any medication you’re currently taking has a chance of interacting with Pirinase nasal spray. Generally, you should avoid taking any other corticosteroid medicine with this nasal spray and this includes eczema steroid creams, etc. Other medicines that may interact with Pirinase and increase its effects include some HIV medicines such as ritonavir, cobicistat, and a medicine used to treat fungal infections known as ketoconazole.

What about if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

It is up to your doctor to decide whether this medicine is safe to use while pregnant or breastfeeding, they will weigh up the risks and benefits and they may suggest this medicine if it’s absolutely necessary. Alternatively, there may be other ways of controlling your allergy symptoms during pregnancy or breastfeeding, but do speak to your doctor before taking any medicines or if you’re in this situation.

Pirinase dosage

The usual dose for adults over the age of 18 years is two puffs to be sprayed into each nostril once daily, this may increase to twice daily if symptoms are particularly bad, however, you shouldn’t use any more than 4 sprays in a day. Once symptoms begin to improve you may be able to lower your dose to one puff in each nostril once daily.

How to use Pirinase allergy nasal spray

This nasal spray is simple to use. Before you start, shake the spray a few times, you may need to pump the spray several times to get it started if it’s the first time using it. To do this, place your thumb underneath the bottle and your middle and forefinger on either side of the nozzle and push down to pump. Repeat the following steps in the opposite nostril with the recommended dose.

  • 1. Remove dust cap
  • 2. Gently blow your nose
  • 3. Close one nostril with your finger, tilt your head forward slightly, and put the nozzle in your opposite nostril
  • 4. Slowly breathe in and out through your nose and as you breathe in squirt one spray into your nostril
  • 5. Then breathe out through your mouth
  • 6. Repeat with a second spray
  • 7. Remove the nozzle and breathe out throughout your mouth
  • 8. After using, wipe the nozzle clean and replace the dust cap

Are there any side effects of Pirinase hay fever nasal spray?

All medicines have side effects and it’s important to take care with any steroid medicine. However, most side effects are rare and not everyone who uses this nasal spray will experience side effects. The most common side effects are nosebleeds, headache, an unpleasant taste or smell, dryness or irritation in the nose or throat, around 1 in 10 people will have these side effects.

Stop taking this medicine immediately and seek urgent medical help if you experience an allergic reaction to this medicine, symptoms may include a rash, swelling of the mouth or face, and difficulty breathing. This is a serious but very rare side effect.
