Pregnyl

Pregnyl is a prescription medication used in the treatment of fertility and sexual development. This medicine is used by both men and women but has different purposes, for instance, in women this medicine helps ovulation, and in men it aids the production of testosterone.

Pregnyl belongs to a group of medicines known as gonadotropins which are natural sex hormones which stimulate the testes in men and the ovaries in men. Pregnyl has different roles in men and women and therefore the side effects and the administration and dosage may be different. Pregnyl is available in the UK by prescription only and you should speak to a GP before taking this medication to determine your suitability.

This medicine is not available to request via our online service. If you are still having trouble with your symptoms please visit the NHS website for services in your area.

How does Pregnyl work in women?

Pregnyl is designed to help women with fertility problems and those who are not able to ovulate naturally. It does this by stimulating the follicles to grow and develop so that a mature egg can be released for fertilisation. Pregnyl can be used in combination with other hormones, but Pregnyl is often used in the final stage of development to prompt the release of an egg which is fertilised naturally or in a laboratory if you’re having IVF. Pregnyl is administered to women via injection.

How does it work in men?

In males, Pregnyl is designed to help with puberty development, undescended testicles, and low sperm count. It does this by stimulating the testicles to produce more testosterone and sperm.

In both men and women infertility may occur when the body does not produce enough of the hormones known as follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinising hormone (LH), and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) which help with ovulation in women and sperm production in men.

Who is suitable to use Pregnyl?

Pregnyl is suitable for men and women who have been diagnosed with fertility problems such as difficulty ovulating or not producing enough sperm, and require stimulation from these specific sex hormones. Pregnyl may also be suitable if you’re undergoing IVF treatment.

Who is not suitable to use Pregnyl?

Pregnyl may not be suitable for some men and women, but there may be alternative treatments available that are more suited to you. This medication may not be suitable for some people for a number of reasons, this is usually due to interaction with other medications or health conditions. You should consult with our online doctors before being prescribed this medication to determine your suitability.

Pregnyl is not suitable if you have the following conditions:

  • Cancer - particularly breast, ovary or womb cancer
  • A thyroid, adrenal, or pituitary illness
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding in women
  • Fibroids in the womb or abnormalities of the reproductive organs
  • Cancers such as testicular, prostate or breast cancer in men
  • Uncontrolled pituitary gland or hypothalamic problems
  • Underactive thyroid gland
  • Adrenal glands not working properly
  • High prolactin levels in the blood
  • An allergy to human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) or any other ingredient in Pregnyl

Allergic reactions are serious and can be life threatening, so it’s important if you’re aware of an allergy that you avoid taking this medicine. If you’re not aware of an allergy and experience a reaction while taking this medicine you should seek medical help immediately.

Can you take Pregnyl with other medication?

You should always check when starting a new medication that it is safe to take with any existing medication that you may be taking to avoid side effects and interaction between the medications. Pregnyl may affect how your other medicines work and vice versa. Be aware when using pregnancy tests up to ten days after administering Pregnyl that this medicine may produce a false positive result.

How to use Pregnyl

How you use Pregnyl and the prescribed dose will depend on the reason for taking this medicine. Pregnyl is given by injection and the patient information leaflet will demonstrate how to use the injection if you’re administering the medicine yourself. The first injection should always be carried out under medical supervision. Pregnyl can either be injected under the skin which you may be able to do yourself, or injected slowly into the muscle either in the bottom, upper leg, or upper arm. Injecting into the muscle must only be carried out by a doctor or nurse.

The prescribed dose may be different for men and women and the purpose for using the medicine. For women using Pregnyl for ovulation purposes, the recommended dose is 5,000–10,000 I.U. after treatment with other fertility drugs, 2 to 3 repeat injections of 1,000 to 3,000 I.U. each may be given within the following 9 days. For IVF treatment the dose is 5,000–10,000 I.U. Pregnyl 30–40 hours after the last injection of other fertility drugs.

For men, the dose is usually 2-3 injections of Pregnyl given for weeks or months depending on what you’re using this medicine for. If used for low sperm count you may need to use the injections for at least three months due to the rate at which sperm cells develop.

What are the side effects of Pregnyl?

As with any medication there are side effects, some are common and some are very rare, and some people may not experience them at all. Side effects of Pregnyl may vary between men and women. If you experience any side effects you should stop taking this medication and consult a doctor.

Side effects of Pregnyl may include fluid retention, headache, tiredness, and mood changes. There’s also a possibility of an allergic reaction to this medicine and symptoms will include bruising, pain, redness, swelling, and a rash at the injection site, as well as a more widespread rash and fever.

Side effects in women

Pregnyl may overstimulate the ovaries in women which can be a serious complication. Symptoms of this may include pain in the stomach, feeling sick, and diarrhoea. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms you should see a doctor immediately as this can be a serious medical condition.

Side effects in men

Side effects in men may include swelling of the ankles or feet, and breast enlargement due to fluid retention in the tissues caused by an increase of androgens.
