Provigil

Provigil is the branded version of the drug modafinil. Provigil and modafinil are used to treat narcolepsy in adults. Narcolepsy is a condition that’s classified as a sleep disorder that involves the neurological system. In people that suffer with the condition, the brain isn’t able to regulate sleeping and waking patterns, which can result in excessive sleepiness, sleep attacks (falling asleep without warning and at inappropriate times), and sudden bouts of muscle weakness called cataplexy. Provigil is given to people that suffer from these symptoms as it helps to reduce sleep attacks and fatigue.

Narcolepsy treatment

Provigil is a psychoanaleptic drug that promotes wakefulness and is a common narcolepsy treatment. Provigil is the branded form of modafinil in the UK, and is only available on prescription. Provigil and modafinil are only licenced to treat narcolepsy, though other people have been prescribed the drug on an off-licence basis. This means that whilst the drug isn’t recognised as a treatment for a condition, doctors and specialists can prescribe it if they think it will help a patient. One example of Provigil and modafinil being used in this way is in some ADHD or ADD patients. The drug isn’t a first-line treatment for this, but some have reported that it improves their concentration and other symptoms of ADHD/ADD. Because of this, it’s become a popular drug with students during deadlines. However, Provigil hasn’t been tested on healthy adults, so there’s no proof that it will aid concentration in somebody without narcolepsy or ADHD. Provigil is primarily for the treatment of narcolepsy, and you must have a valid prescription to buy the medication.

How does Provigil work?

It isn’t fully understood how Provigil actually works in the body, but narcolepsy patients that take the drug have reported feeling less tired and suffering from fewer sleep attacks. As a psychoanaleptic, we know that it stimulates some part of the central nervous system, but the exact mechanism of the medicine hasn’t been uncovered yet. There are several theories surrounding how Provigil works, one being that it stimulates certain neurotransmitters in the brain that are associated with sleep and wake cycles, whilst other theories introduce the idea that it encourages the release of dopamine.

Is Provigil safe?

Provigil is a drug that’s widely used across the world as a first-line treatment for those with narcolepsy, so it’s safe for a vast majority of the population. Provigil and modafinil aren’t controlled drugs, so they don’t carry any safety restrictions that more dangerous medicines do, however, it could still be unsafe for some people. Most medicines carry warnings for certain health conditions, and Provigil is no exception, so if you struggle with any of the following, you’re advised to avoid the medication or speak to your own doctor before considering it as a treatment option:

  • Allergic to modafinil or any of its ingredients
  • Have an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart problems
  • Mental health issues
  • Kidney or liver problems
  • Alcohol or drug dependencies or issues

It’s also important to know that Provigil and modafinil can cause suicidal or aggressive thoughts in some cases – hence why those with pre-existing mental health issues should see their doctor about using the medicine safely. You should always tell your GP if you start to have suicidal thoughts so that you can get the help that you need as soon as possible. Provigil and modafinil can also interact with some other medicines. If you take any of the following, you shouldn’t take modafinil until you’ve spoken to your doctor about dosages and whether it’s safe for you:

  • Hormonal contraceptives
  • Omeprazole
  • HIV treatment
  • Ciclosporin
  • Medicines for epilepsy
  • Antidepressants
  • Anti-anxiety medication
  • Blood thinning medication
  • Beta-blockers
  • Statins

Medicine interactions can be dangerous, as it can enhance or decrease the effects of certain drugs. For example, modafinil can make the contraceptive pill less effective. Speak to your local pharmacist if you’re not sure if you take any medicines that can interact with Provigil, as they’ll be able to advise you. As long as you don’t have any of the health conditions listed, and you aren’t taking any of the interacting drugs, Provigil should be a safe medicine for you to take to treat symptoms of narcolepsy.

Narcolepsy cure

Provigil and modafinil can’t cure narcolepsy. As it stands at the moment, there’s no known cure for the condition, so those that suffer will need to take medication to reduce their symptoms for the foreseeable future. However, the medicines that are available such as modafinil and Provigil often work wonders for patients and improve their quality of life.

Provigil side effects:

Even if Provigil is safe for you to take, it doesn’t mean that you’re immune to experiencing side effects. Some of these can be unpleasant, and if they outweigh the benefits of the medicine, you should talk to your GP about stopping Provigil. Some of the most commonly reported symptoms associated with Provigil and modafinil are:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Awareness of heart beat
  • Fast heart beat
  • Chest pain
  • Flushing
  • Dry mouth
  • Reduced appetite
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain
  • Indigestion
  • Diarrhoea or constipation
  • Weakness
  • Numbness or tingling of hands/feet
  • Blurred vision
  • Increased amount of liver enzymes
  • Irritability

Most people find that the side effects are only mild, or that the benefits of Provigil outweigh the symptoms associated with it. This isn’t an exhaustive list though, and you should always read the patient information leaflet thoroughly before taking any new medicine to make sure you’re aware of what you might experience. Sometimes, Provigil and modafinil can cause an allergic reaction, or a sudden change in your state of mind. Both of these instances require immediate care and the symptoms are:

  • Sudden difficulty breathing
  • Wheezing
  • Swollen face, mouth or throat
  • Skin rash or itching
  • High temperature
  • Abnormal blood test results
  • Change in mental health state or wellbeing

If you notice any of these symptoms even if you’ve only taken the recommended dose, you should ring 999 and explain your symptoms to them, making sure to say that you’ve taken Provigil or modafinil.

Provigil overdose:

Although it’s a safe medicine, there’s still the potential that if you take too much of it, you might overdose. This can be dangerous and needs immediate medical attention. Symptoms that you should be aware of if you’ve taken too much Provigil are:

  • Nausea
  • Restlessness
  • Feeling disoriented
  • Confusion
  • Agitation
  • Anxiousness
  • Excitement
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Diarrhoea
  • Hallucinations
  • Chest pain
  • Altered heart beat
  • Increased blood pressure

If you know you’ve taken too much modafinil, you should visit your nearest A&E department for monitoring, especially if you’re already presenting with signs of overdose.

Provigil dosage:

The recommended dose of Provigil is 200mg per day. This can be taken in one dose, or split between two doses, taking 100mg in the morning, and the other 100mg at lunch time. Provigil and modafinil should always be taken in the morning, or when you need to be awake for the longest amount of time. This may differ for shift workers.

Provigil UK:

Provigil can be obtained in the UK with a valid prescription. These are available both on the NHS and through private services.
