Rabeprazole is a prescription medicine which is taken to treat acid reflux and other conditions related to having too much acid in the stomach. Rabeprazole is a Proton Pump Inhibitor and can reduce the amount of stomach acid being produced. This helps to reduce symptoms you may be experiencing such as a burning sensation in your chest, an unpleasant sour taste in your mouth and regurgitating food or liquid from your stomach. What are Rabeprazole tablets?

Rabeprazole tablets are used mainly to treat acid reflux and can also be prescribed for related conditions including heartburn, stomach ulcers and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). It can also be used to treat a rare condition called Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, which leads the stomach to produce extremely high amounts of acid.

Basically, rabeprazole is taken to reduce the amount of stomach acid you have. This is key to reducing symptoms of conditions such as acid reflux, which occur when you have an excessive amount of stomach acid and some of it travels up towards the throat. Rabeprazole tablets are available in strengths of 10mg and 20mg.

How does Rabeprazole work?

Rabeprazole is part of a group of medicines called Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs). Such medicines work by blocking an enzyme in the wall of the stomach which produces acid. The stomach requires the production of acid for certain vital functions, but there can be times when the amount of acid being produced is problematic. That can make PPIs like rabeprazole very useful in allowing you to manage your level of stomach acid production to a more tolerable amount.

Can I use Rabeprazole?

If you have one of the conditions which rabeprazole is designed to treat, then it’s possible to be prescribed this medication. But there are certain circumstances which may make this treatment unsuitable for you to take, so it’s worth checking in advance you’re safe to use it.

You should not take rabeprazole tablets if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or think you might be pregnant.

If any of the following listed below applies to you, then you should consult your doctor, nurse or local pharmacist before using rabeprazole:

  • You are allergic to other proton pump inhibitors which exist
  • You have previously experienced a skin reaction after taking a medicine which reduces stomach acid
  • You have a stomach tumour
  • You have or have previously had liver problems
  • You are taking a medicine called atazanavir which is used to treat HIV infection
  • You have a problem that affects how much fat or vitamin B12 your body stores
  • You are due to have a specific blood test (Chromogranin A)
  • You are due to have an endoscopy (you may need to stop taking rabeprazole for a few weeks prior to the endoscopy)

Rabeprazole dosing

When prescribed rabeprazole, it is normal for it to be taken once a day and first thing in the morning. If your doctor prescribes it for twice a day, then it’s recommended you take one dose in the morning and the other in the evening. It’s best to take rabeprazole tablets before a meal and to swallow them whole with a drink of water.

The exact daily dosage which is recommended to you will depend on which specific condition you are treating and your requirements. When treating acid reflux, heartburn or GORD, either 10mg or 20mg a day can be prescribed by a doctor. For stomach ulcers, the daily dose is usually 20mg a day.

If you are treating Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, then the dosage is much higher at 60mg to 120mg a day. Rabeprazole may also be prescribed as part of efforts to eradicate H. pylori infection (a bacterial infection in the stomach). If rabeprazole tablets are being used for this purpose, then patients will take two 20mg tablets per day for typically a 7-day period and in combination with two antibiotics (clarithromycin and amoxicillin).

Can Rabeprazole cause side effects?

As is the case with other medicines, it is possible that rabeprazole could cause side effects. However, the vast majority of patients who use this medicine do not experience any.

The most commonly reported side effects linked to rabeprazole include the following:

  • Cough and sore throat plus runny nose
  • Effects on stomach such as trapped wind, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, constipation and general stomach pain
  • Aches and back pain
  • Weakness or loss of strength
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Headaches and dizziness
  • Benign polyps in the stomach

Other side effects are possible but rarer than the ones listed above. Even if side effects do occur, they are usually short-lasting and you likely won’t need to worry too much. If, however, you do experience symptoms which are concerning, such as signs of an allergic reaction or infection, then report this to a doctor or hospital as soon as possible.
