Relvar Ellipta

Relvar Ellipta is an inhaler device used in the treatment of conditions such as asthma and COPD. Both asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are both long term conditions which can cause severe breathing difficulties and the symptoms need to be managed to prevent serious flare ups or attacks. These conditions are caused by the lungs and airways becoming inflamed and narrow, this makes it difficult for air to flow in and out of the lungs which is necessary for breathing. Relvar Ellipta combines two active ingredients to help ease breathing, these are called fluticasone furoate and vilanterol.

How does Relvar Ellipta work?

Each of the active ingredients in this medicine has a role in helping the air flow more easily. Fluticasone furoate belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids which is a natural hormone found in the body and controls inflammatory responses, in the case of asthma and COPD it reduces inflammation in the lungs. Vilanterol belongs to a group of medicines called long-acting bronchodilators which relaxes and opens up the airways to make it easier to breathe.

How to use Relvar Ellipta

When using this inhaler always follow the guidelines given by your doctor and shown on the patient information leaflet which should have a step-by-step guide on how to use it. Once you’ve opened the device you shouldn’t use if after 6 weeks. To use the device you should first hold the inhaler away from your mouth and breathe out as far as you can. You should then place the mouthpiece between your lips and close them firmly around it, then take a long deep breath in and hold it for as long as you can. After your deep breath in, remove the inhaler from your mouth and breathe out slowly and gently. It’s best to rinse your mouth afterward instead of swallowing as this will prevent getting a sore mouth or sore throat.

Who is Relvar Ellipta suitable for?

Relvar Ellipta is suitable for adults who have severe COPD or asthma, it may also be used in adolescents and children over the age of 12 for asthma. It may be used in people who have tried other methods of helping their asthma but with no effect. If your asthma isn't controlled with a preventer inhaler or reliever inhaler, you may be suitable for Relvar Ellipta. Although this inhaler is used for severe COPD and asthma it is not suitable to be used in a sudden attack of breathlessness or wheezing, you must have a salbutamol inhaler which reacts fast in an attack.

Who is not suitable to use Relvar Ellipta?

There are some factors which may prevent some people from using this type of inhaler. This is usually because of any other health conditions a patient may have, or if they’re taking any other medication which could interact with Relvar Ellipta, or possibly if they’re pregnant or breastfeeding. Our online doctors will be able to determine your suitability based on your medical history and current health condition, you should always consult a doctor before using this medicine. Relvar Ellipta should not be taken by COPD patients under the age of 18 years old.

Can I use Relvar Ellipta while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Any medication you take must be discussed with your doctor first if you’re pregnant to ensure that it won’t have any effect on your baby. Although your asthma or other lung condition still needs to be treated during pregnancy to avoid any attack, you must not use Relvar Ellipta while pregnant unless your doctor has advised that it is safe to do so. The same applies to breastfeeding as it is not known whether this medicine can pass into breast milk and therefore affect your baby.
