Rennie Liquid Heartburn Relief

Rennie Liquid Heartburn Relief is a medicine which can be taken after meals and just before bedtime to prevent stomach acid from escaping into the food pipe and causing problems like acid reflux, indigestion and heartburn. This medicine is an oral suspension which patients can use multiple times a day. Rennie is also available in tablet form, but this oral suspension can work better for patients who may struggle with taking tablets.

Rennie Liquid Heartburn Relief can be used by most adults and children aged 6 or above to protect from problems related to stomach acid. This medicine contains antacids which can neutralise acid in the stomach and therefore prevent it from reaching areas inside the body where it could cause problems after you’ve eaten.

What is Rennie Liquid Heartburn Relief?

Rennie Liquid Heartburn Relief is an oral suspension which can be used to treat problems related to the digestive system including acid reflux, heartburn and indigestion. Rennie is also available in the form of tablets in various flavours, but certain patients may prefer taking a liquid medicine instead. Rennie Liquid forms a protective layer on top of the stomach lining to stop stomach acid escaping into the food pipe and causing discomfort.

How does Rennie liquid work?

Ingredients in Rennie Liquid Heartburn Relief include sodium bicarbonate, calcium carbonate and sodium alginate. Both sodium bicarbonate and calcium bicarbonate are common types of antacids, which are medicines capable of neutralising acid in your stomach. The sodium alginate is used to help form a protective layer in your gullet and prevent excess acid or other harmful substances from disrupting your digestive system.

Who can and cannot take Rennie liquid?

Rennie Liquid Heartburn Relief can be used by adults and children aged 6 or above to treat acid reflux, heartburn, indigestion and other issues related to stomach acid. Keep in mind that the dosage instructions for children aged between 6 and 12 are different compared to those for children and adults aged above 12.

While Rennie Liquid and other medicines with antacids are safe for the majority of people to use, there are certain circumstances which can make them unsuitable. If you are considering taking Rennie Liquid Heartburn Relief, then you should talk to a doctor or local pharmacist first about whether it’s safe or not if any of the following circumstances apply to you:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have liver disease, kidney disease or heart failure
  • You have an illness which means you need to control how much salt is in your diet

On a similar note, other medicines you are taking may end up interacting with Rennie liquid, so it is worth checking with your doctor or local pharmacist if you want to use Rennie alongside other treatments. You should NOT have a dose of Rennie liquid within two hours of taking any other medication by mouth, since this risks interference with the effects of the treatments. This is especially important if you are taking any of the following:

  • Antibiotics (tetracyclines and quinolones such as norfloxacin)
  • Iron preparation
  • Antifungals (such as ketoconazole or digoxin)
  • Beta blockers for heart conditions
  • Penicillamine for rheumatoid arthritis
  • Glucocorticoid for inflammatory and autoimmune disorders
  • Neuroleptics for mental illness
  • Thyroid hormones
  • Chloroquine for malaria
  • Estramustine for prostate cancer
  • Bisphosphonates for osteoporosis

Can Rennie liquid cause side effects?

Like other medicines, Rennie Liquid Heartburn Relief is capable of causing side effects, but it is unlikely you will experience any. If you take a higher dose of this medicine than recommended, then you may feel bloated and other potential side effects. In very rare cases, a patient may experience an allergic reaction to this medication. If you experience any symptoms which indicate an allergic reaction or another serious issue, then stop taking Rennie and contact a doctor as soon as possible.
