What is Rhinocort Aqua Nasal Spray and what does it do?

Rhinocort is a medicated nasal spray that contains a medicine known as budesonide used in the treatment and prevention of allergy symptoms such as that of hay fever and allergic rhinitis, including sneezing, itchy, runny or blocked nose. This nasal spray can be used as a treatment in the onset of symptoms, or as a preventative before being exposed to an allergen. For instance, if you know that pollen triggers your allergy symptoms, you may want to use this spray before going outdoors to prevent symptoms developing.

How does it work?

Rhinocort nasal spray contains budesonide which is a type of corticosteroid. Corticosteroids are a class of drugs that reduce inflammation, they’re a synthetic version of a naturally produced hormone in the body known as cortisol, which helps to control immune response and inflammation. When sprayed into the nose, Rhinocort reduces inflammation in the nasal passage to stop symptoms such as sneezing, irritation in the nose, and runny or blocked nose. This medicine is most effective with regular use, preferably before you’re exposed to the allergen, however, it can treat the symptoms after they develop.

Who can use Rhinocort nasal spray?

This medicine is suitable for most adults over the age of 18 who are experiencing nasal symptoms as a result of an allergy, this could be hay fever or allergic rhinitis, or other types of allergies such as dust mite or pet hair allergy.

Who should not use this nasal spray?

This medicine should not be used by those who have an allergy to or have had a bad reaction to budesonide in the past or any other ingredient in this medicine. It should only be used by adults over the age of 18, therefore anyone under this age should avoid this medicine altogether.

If any of the following apply to you, you’ll need to speak to your doctor before taking this medicine to be sure that’s safe and suitable for you. Speak to your doctor about using this nasal spray if have the following:

  • ulcers in the nose or have recently had nose surgery or any injury to the nose
  • Frequent nose bleeds
  • infections such as tuberculosis, chest infection, chickenpox, or measles
  • glaucoma or cataracts
  • eye infection
  • diabetes
  • liver problems

Can I take Rhinocort while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Evidence shows that the risks of taking Rhinocort nasal spray while pregnant or breastfeeding are low but you should always ask your doctor for advice first. The benefits of this medicine must outweigh the risks, and your doctor will asses this. If you’re pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or are breastfeeding speak to your doctor about whether this medicine is suitable for you.

Can Rhinocort nasal spray be used with other medicines?

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any medicines you may be taking including prescription, non-prescription, and herbal, etc to ensure that there isn’t a risk of interaction with Rhinocort which may cause side effects. You must not use Rhinocort nasal spray with any other corticosteroid medicine, this includes topical steroid creams that may be used for eczema. You should also tell your doctor if you’ve recently stopped taking corticosteroids, or if you’re taking any of the following:

  • Medicines to treat fungal infections
  • Antibiotics
  • HIV medicines
  • Hormone Replacement Therapy
  • Contraceptives such as the pill

What are the side effects of Rhinocort nasal spray?

Like all medicines, Rhinocort does have some side effects. Although not everyone who takes this medicine will experience side effects and most are quite rare. It’s common to experience some nasal irritation soon after spraying it into the nostril, this may include sneezing, slight stinging or dryness in the nose. Nose bleeds are also a commonly reported side effect.

An uncommon side effect may be muscle cramps which are reported in around 1 in 100 people. In rare cases (1 in 1000), nasal ulcers have been reported and long term use of this medicine at high doses can affect the normal production of steroid hormones in the body, but again this is very rare. Other rare side effects may include a change in voice, perforation of the nasal septum, bruising, or blurred vision.

It’s important to pay attention to any signs of a serious allergic reaction which is a rare side effect. Signs may include, a rash, itching, hives, reddening of the skin, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, or tongue, as well as shortness of breath, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. If you are experiencing any of these you must stop using this medicine immediately and seek urgent medical help as allergic reactions can be severe and life-threatening.

Rhinocort dose and how to use

The usual dose that is given to adults over the age of 18 is two sprays in each nostril every morning, but if your symptoms improve this dosage may be reduced. It’s most effective if used before you come into contact with an allergen.

Before using the spray shake it well and remove the protective cap. You may need to pump the nozzle several times until you see a mist if this is the first time using the product. Blow your nose gently and hold the bottle upright with your thumb underneath and your index and middle finger on either side of the nozzle ready to pump. You should then insert the tip of the nozzle into your nostril and spray. Wipe the nozzle after each use.

Refer to the patient information leaflet for more details and visuals showing you how to use the spray and the best way to keep it clean.

How long can I use Rhinocort for?

Rhinocort nasal spray may be used for up to three months, however, if your symptoms have not improved after 14 days of use or if you’re feeling worse you must see your doctor.
