Salbulin

Salbulin is a dry powder medication that is inhaled to treat symptoms of asthma whenever you are exposed to ‘triggers’ which could start an asthma attack. This treatment is typically taken shortly before a patient is about to exercise or enter an area where they are likely to be exposed to allergens such as pollen, smoke or dust.

What is Salbulin?

Salbulin is a reliever treatment for preventing the symptoms of an asthma attack. It belongs to a category of treatments called bronchodilators and it is taken when someone has just been exposed to something that could trigger their asthma symptoms. That makes it different to preventer medications, which are taken specifically when an asthma attack has begun developing. Salbulin is inhaled by patients as a dry powder.

How does Salbulin work?

Salbulin contains the active substance salbutamol, which helps patients to breathe easier by manipulating the function of beta-2 receptors. This encourages the muscles lining the respiratory pipes to relax. This is important as they can become tightened and instigate asthma symptoms, due to inflammation caused by chemicals the immune system releases in response to irritants such as pollen or chemical residue.

The medicine is inhaled through what’s called a novolizer device which is similar to an inhaler. It uses cartridges that contain metered doses of the active ingredient.

How do I take Salbulin?

The information leaflet for this product will include thorough instructions on how to maintain and use the inhaler device properly. The recommended dosage instructions can vary in some parts depending on your age.

For adults and adolescents aged 12 and above, the dosage for relieving symptoms is 1 puff initially, possibly increased to 2 puffs if needed. If 2 puffs are required, then you should leave at least 1 minute between each puff. The next dose should be taken less than 4 hours later. To prevent triggering symptoms due to exercise or contact with a trigger, 2 puffs should be taken 10-15 minutes before exercise or exposure to the trigger. The maximum number of doses taken in one day should be no more than 8 puffs.

If a child aged 6 to 12 years old is using this medication, the dosage instructions are the same for relieving symptoms, but for preventing asthma triggered by exercise or other elements, 1 puff is recommended 10-15 minutes before exposure. This can be increased to 2 puffs if deemed necessary. The maximum daily dose is 4 puffs instead of 8. This medication is not meant to be used by children aged below 6.

What are the side effects of Salbulin?

The chances are you won’t experience any side effects while using Salbulin, but some are possible and in rare cases, they can be a serious concern. The most common side effects reported by users of this medication include the following:

  • Unpleasant or unusual taste
  • Irritation of the throat and mouth which causes coughing
  • Shakiness (usually in the hands)
  • Dizziness and headaches
  • Restlessness
  • Sweating

If these symptoms crop up, they usually wear off within 2 weeks of treatment. In rare cases, side effects can include inflammation of the kidney, a faster or uneven heartbeat, chest pain and feeling faint. If you experience any side effects that are particularly worrying or they last a long time, speak to your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible.

Can I use Salbulin?

Before taking Salbulin, it’s important to check you don’t have any medical conditions or other medicine you’re currently using which could create complications with this particular treatment. You should let your doctor know if you have any of the following conditions so they can advise the best course of action:

  • A heart or circulatory problem (such as angina or a recent heart attack)
  • High blood pressure
  • Overactive thyroid gland
  • Diabetes
  • A tumour near your kidney
  • You’re going to have an operation requiring general anaesthetic in the near future
  • You have an intolerance to some sugars (Salbulin contains lactose)

Let your doctor know about other medications you are currently taking or have recently used before you start Salbulin. These medicines in particular can disrupt the effects of Salbulin in undesirable ways:

  • Other drugs for treating asthma symptoms (such as Xanthine derivatives or steroids)
  • Beta-blockers (such as Atenolol)
  • Water tablets (such as Frusemide)
  • Digoxin
  • Antidepressants (such as amitriptyline or clomipramide)

You should also inform your doctor if you are pregnant, breast-feeding or planning to get pregnant before using this medication. During pregnancy, it’s possible that salbutamol can pass through the placenta and could cause the heart rate of the foetus (unborn baby) to increase. Salbutamol is also capable of getting into breast milk, so side effects could occur when breastfeeding an infant.

What if I take too much Salbulin?

If you take more puffs of this medicine than recommended, then your heart may beat faster than usual and you may also feel shaky. These effects typically wear off after a few hours but you should nevertheless contact your doctor immediately if this mistake occurs.
