What is Scheriproct?

Scheriproct is a medicinal ointment used to relieve the pain and inflammation of piles, medically known as haemorrhoids. It is a short-term treatment which is typically used for 5 to 7 days. Haemorrhoids can prove to be painful, annoying and embarrassing, but a treatment like Scheriproct can make things a lot more tolerable.

The ingredients in this ointment can manage the symptoms of haemorrhoids, reducing pain and irritation in the affected region. It is a very common but easily resolved illness, and Scheriproct will bring you comfort quickly and easily.

How does Scheriproct work?

Scheriproct contains two active ingredients, prednisolone and cinchocaine, which work together in a two pronged approach to relieve you of the pain of piles. Prednisolone is a type of steroid medication which helps to reduce the inflammation and itchy feeling.

Cinchocaine works alongside as a local anaesthetic to help manage the pain and discomfort. Local anaesthetics work by numbing the affected area for a short period of time, and cinchocaine is one of the most potent types.

Who is Scheriproct suitable for?

Although Scheriproct is designed for those suffering from haemorrhoids, your medical history may mean it isn’t right for you to use it. You should avoid using Scheriproct if any of the following apply to you:

  • You are allergic to cinchocaine, prednisolone or any of the other ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet
  • You are allergic to local anaesthetics
  • You have a viral, bacterial or fungal infection such as thrush, herpes, shingles, HIV or chickenpox
  • You have trauma to the skin you want to treat

You should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking (or have recently used) any other medicines before you start using Scheriproct. You should also seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist if you are thinking of using this treatment while you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to have a baby.

How do I use Scheriproct?

You should always adhere to the instructions provided by your doctor. You can carefully read the patient information leaflet with this product if you’re unsure about how to use Scheriproct correctly.

In the majority of cases, the typical dosage instructions for Scheriproct are to use it twice a day. Your doctor may instruct you to use it more during the first day of treatment so the medication can get to work fast.

Wash the area you plan to use the ointment on and carefully dry it before using the medication. Apply a small pea-sized amount of the ointment onto your finger and then distribute it softly over the affected region (on the skin and just inside the anus). Do not completely rub in the ointment.

For applying internally, a nozzle is supplied. This should be added onto the end of the tube. It is then inserted carefully so that the whole length of the nozzle is inside the anus. Squeeze the tube lightly while drawing the nozzle out slowly. Wash and rinse the nozzle after use.

Remember that Scheriproct is meant to be a short-term treatment used for 5 to 7 days. If you use this medication for longer than that period of time, then the chances of experiencing side effects are increased.

What are the side effects of Scheriproct?

Like all medications, Scheriproct may have side effects, but not everyone gets them. Common side effects include:

  • Mild skin reactions in the affected area caused by Castor oil
  • Some skin thinning in the treated area may occur if the medicine is used for much longer than the recommended 5-7 days. This should resolve itself once treatment stops

Other, more serious side effects are possible but the chances of them occurring are very small. Nevertheless, if you do experience any side effects which are particularly alarming or prolonged, contact your doctor or nearest hospital emergency department as soon as you can.

What if I miss a dose of Scheriproct?

If you forget to take a dose of this medication, then try to take it as soon as you remember. Do not, however, apply a double dose of this treatment at any time even if it’s to make up for a missed dose.
