Seretide

Seretide is a preventer treatment for relieving symptoms of asthma. The medication is available in several different strengths and can be taken by adults or children via one of two types of inhaler, they’re known as an Evohaler and Accuhaler. The ingredients in Seretide work to prevent inflammation in the airways of the lungs so that patients can continue to breathe easy even after being exposed to triggers of their asthma symptoms.

Salmeterol and fluticasone shouldn't be used in the event of an asthma attack. It should be used twice daily to prevent breathlessness and wheezing. If you experience an asthma attack, you should use a reliever inhaler.

What is Seretide?

Seretide is an inhaler treatment for asthma. It can be taken with either an Evohaler or an Accuhaler, with the former being a conventional canister inhaler while the latter is a dry powder version. This medication is considered a preventer treatment, meaning it’s designed to reduce the chances of asthma symptoms developing by easing the inflammation which causes them.

How does Seretide work?

Seretide contains two medications called salmeterol and fluticasone propionate. Salmeterol relaxes the muscles which line the trachea and bronchi, which are both crucial in passing air through to the lungs. The effect is that it makes breathing easier for the user by keeping the airways more open for as long as 12 hours.

Fluticasone is a corticosteroid that suppresses the activity of a chemical that is released by the immune system in response to certain triggers. This chemical can cause inflammation and an increase in potentially obstructive mucus, but by stopping the chemical production, the fluticasone prevents symptoms from developing. Unlike reliever treatments that are taken when asthma attacks begin developing, preventer treatments like Seretide are taken on a regular basis to prevent an asthma attack from happening in the first place.

How do I use Seretide?

Instructions for using this medication vary depending on whether you take it with either an Evohaler or an Accuhaler. There are differences in how these two items are operated and they also offer different selections in regards to the strength of the medication. Your doctor and information leaflet should provide detailed, accurate instructions on how you should take this treatment and how to properly maintain your inhaler.

Whichever strength is deemed appropriate for you; the typical dosage is two puffs a day if it’s a Evohaler or one puff a day if it’s an Accuhaler. These instructions apply to both adults and children, but this medication should only be used by children aged 4 years old or above.

If you are using the Evohaler to take this medication, then your doctor may instruct you to reduce your dosage to one puff a day when symptoms become well controlled. You may be specifically guided to take a puff once at night if you have night-time symptoms, or once in the morning if you have daytime symptoms.

What are the side effects of Seretide?

There are side effects which occur from using Seretide but serious issues are very rare and you may ultimately experience none at all. The most common side effects reported are:

  • Headaches
  • Aching, swollen joints and muscle pain
  • Muscle cramps
  • Irritation and roughness in the mouth and throat, possibly caused by thrush. Rinsing your mouth out with water and spitting it out immediately and/or brushing your teeth may help avoid this side effect. Your doctor may prescribe an anti-fungal medication if it turns out you have thrush.

It is always best to inform your doctor or pharmacist about any side effects experienced while taking Seretide. Some potential side effects could be linked to a serious allergic reaction or health problem, so you should tell your doctor right away if you experience the following:

  • Fever or chills
  • Increased mucus production or a change in mucus colour
  • Increased coughing or breathing difficulties

Can I use Seretide?

Before you begin using Seretide, there are certain precautionary checks to be made to ensure that there aren’t any health conditions you have or other medications you’re taking that could complicate the use of this treatment. For instance, you should speak to your doctor before starting this medication if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Overactive thyroid gland
  • Low potassium in your blood
  • Blurred vision or other visual disturbances
  • You’re pregnant, breast-feeding or planning to get pregnant
  • You have or have previously had tuberculosis or other lung infections

You should also speak to your doctor or pharmacist about any other medications you are currently taking, whether they are for asthma symptoms or unrelated conditions. Some medicines may not be suitable to take with Seretide. It’s especially important to highlight any of these medicines you might be taking:

  • Beta-blockers (such as propranolol and atenolol)
  • Corticosteroids (by mouth or by injection)
  • Diuretics (water tablets) for treating high blood pressure
  • Other bronchodilators (such as salbutamol)
  • Xanthine medicines (usually used to treat asthma)
  • Medicines for HIV treatment (such as ritonavir)
  • Medicines for treating other infections (such as ketoconazole and erythromycin)
