What is Aciclovir and what does it do?

Aciclovir tablets contain 400mg of the active ingredient with the same name. Aciclovir is indicated for the treatment of genital herpes and herpes simplex. It may also be prescribed to treat chickenpox and shingles infections.

When is Aciclovir prescribed?

Aciclovir tablets may be prescribed to shorten the duration and relieve the severity of a genital herpes outbreak. Aciclovir tablets work by inhibiting the spreading and development of the virus.

Aciclovir for Herpes suppression:

Aciclovir tablets is likely to be prescribed to treat recurrent outbreaks of genital herpes in adults. The tablets may also be prescribed as a 3 month suppression course to prevent outbreaks in patients experiencing six or more outbreaks per year.

  • Take Probenecid (to treat gout), Cimetidine (to treat peptic ulcers), Mycofenolate mofetil (to suppress immunity in transplant patients) or Theophylline (to treat asthma and other breathing problems).

What is the recommended dosage of Aciclovir?

You should follow the doctor’s instructions on how to take this medicine. The doses outlined below is for your reference only. The dose may vary depending on your condition.

Aciclovir dosage to treat an active genital herpes outbreak:

Take 1 tablet, 3 times daily. The tablet can be swallowed whole with water, or dissolved in 50ml of water.

Aciclovir dosage to suppress genital herpes:

Take 1 tablet, twice daily for up to 12 months. The course should be reassessed by your GP every 6 to 12 months.

Does Aciclovir cause any side effects?

Yes, just like all medicines, Aciclovir may cause side effects in some users. However, the susceptibility to side effects varies from person to person, and not everyone will experience side effects.

Common side effects associated with taking Aciclovir includes, but are not limited to:

  • Skin rashes and/or increased sensitivity to the sun.
  • Itching.
  • Headache.
  • Feeling sick or being sick.
  • Feeling tired.
