Silicolgel

Silicolgel is an oral medicine which can be taken to treat problems related to the stomach and intestines such as acid reflux, heartburn and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It may be used to treat chronic issues affecting the gut or more short-term problems which occur because of a change of diet while travelling or on holiday. When a patient takes a dose of silicolgel, they coat the lining of the stomach and intestines with a gel containing silicic acid. These minerals are then able to absorb toxins, pathogens and other harmful substances which may otherwise cause problems within the gastrointestinal tract.

What is Silicolgel and who can use it?

Silicolgel (alternatively written as Silicol Gel) is an oral gel which can be used as a treatment for various gastrointestinal disorders. The conditions which silicolgel can treat includes acid reflux and heartburn. This medicine can also be used to reduce symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which can include nausea, flatulence, stomach ache and diarrhoea. Silicolgel can also symptoms in the gastrointestinal tract that may occur due to a change in diet while travelling or on holiday.

Silicolgel is suitable for adults and children aged 12 and above who are having trouble with gastrointestinal disorders.

How does Silicolgel work?

Silicolgel contains silicic acid, which is a compound of the mineral substance silicon and oxygen in a highly dispersible and hydrated form. Both silicon and oxygen are among the most abundant elements on earth and both are commonly used in treatments designed to tackle gastrointestinal complaints.

When silicolgel is consumed by a patient, it forms a protective and soothing coating over the lining of the stomach and intestines. Thanks to the absorptive and binding qualities of colloidal silicic acid, the treatment is able to attract and absorb irritants, toxins and pathogens. The particles in silicolgel also absorb excess acidity and gases. By absorbing these harmful substances, silicolgel prevents them from causing disturbances in the stomach or intestines which would normally lead to issues like acid reflux or IBS. When the stomach empties naturally, the contents of silicolgel along with the substances they’ve absorbed are passed through the body.

How to use Silicolgel

Before each use of silicolgel, make sure you shake the bottle well. If you are taking any other medicines, then take silicolgel at least 1 hour before or after the intake of these other meds.

To treat gastrointestinal disorders, take 1 tablespoon (15ml) of silicolgel three times daily. It is preferable to take this treatment just after meals. You can take silicolgel either undiluted or diluted with water. After acute symptoms have eased, treatment with silicolgel can continue for another few days. If the symptoms you’re treating haven’t reduced after three days of using silicolgel, then consult a doctor on the next steps to take.

If diarrhoea is one of the symptoms you are treating with silicolgel, then it is important to replace lost fluids by drinking plenty of water.

If you are treating a chronic gastrointestinal disorder, then you may want to use silicolgel for up to four weeks before taking a break to reassess your symptoms.

Does Silicolgel cause side effects?

Silicolgel has no known side effects and is considered safe to take alongside other medications you may be using. If you do experience any side effects after using this treatment, then speak to a doctor or your local pharmacist about this.
