Skinoren

Skinoren is a topical medication used in the treatment of acne. Skinoren is available in cream form and should only be applied to acne skin. Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that causes spots and pimples to appear commonly on the face, back and chest. The spots and pimples are usually in the form of blackheads and whiteheads, but may also develop into cystic acne which causes large, painful and pus-filled cysts which can scar. This medication helps to clear acne to prevent infection and scarring. Skinoren is available in the UK on prescription only and you should follow the instructions directed by a doctor when using this medication.

How does Skinoren work?

Skinoren contains the active ingredient azelaic acid and works by attacking the bacteria that causes acne which is known as Propionibacterium. This bacterium irritates the sebaceous glands, resulting in spots and inflammation of the skin. Propionibacterium thrives off sebum, and people with acne overproduce sebum meaning this bacterium grows in numbers. Skinoren reduces sebum which in turn reduces the amount of bacteria and controls acne.

Blackheads and whiteheads can also appear when the pores become blocked. Pores can be blocked by certain skin cells, and Skinoren reduces the growth of these skin cells to open and unblock pores.

Who is Skinoren suitable for?

Skinoren is only suitable for those who suffer from acne, and acne is characterised by multiple painful spots and pimples. Skinoren is a prescription medication and should only be used for the intended purpose, it is only suitable for those with acne and should not be used to treat any other skin condition.

Who is Skinoren not suitable for?

Not everyone with acne will be suitable for this treatment. There are many acne treatments available and you may find a suitable alternative if Skinoren does not work for you. There are multiple reasons why a medication may not be suitable, but usually this is due to interaction with other drugs, or other health conditions. You may also not be suitable to take Skinoren if you are pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant or are breastfeeding.

Skinoren is also not suitable for children under the age of 12 as safety for their use has not been established.

Is Skinoren safe to use while pregnant?

Some of the cream may be absorbed through the skin but there is little evidence on the effect this has on pregnancy and therefore its safety has not been established. If you’re currently taking Skinoren and fall pregnant you should discuss with your GP whether it would be safer to stop this medication. A doctor will be able to discuss the risks involved in using Skinoren while pregnant or if you’re planning to become pregnant. It’s also not recommended to use Skinoren while breastfeeding, particularly if it’s applied around the breast area.

Skinoren and health conditions

Skinoren may not be suitable if you have other health problems. You should discuss your health problems with your GP to ensure that Skinoren is suitable and will not worsen your condition. You should be particularly careful if you have an allergy to Skinoren, this medication is not suitable if you are allergic to azelaic acid or any other ingredient in Skinoren.

Those with asthma should also be particularly careful when choosing acne treatment as Skinoren has been known to worsen asthma symptoms.

Skinoren and other medication

Whenever you start a new medication you should discuss with your GP any other medications that you may be taking to ensure that there are no interactions between the drugs. Skinoren is not known to interact with other medications or lessen their effect, and can be used alongside oral medications.

How to use Skinoren

Skinoren should only be applied to skin that is affected by acne, and the area should be clean before application. Wash the area thoroughly with water, and it should be dry and free from grease or oils before you apply the cream. Skinoren is usually applied to the skin twice a day unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Depending on the size of the infected area your doctor will also guide you on how much cream to apply. The severity of your condition will also determine how long you will need to apply the cream until the acne has fully cleared.

Are there any side effects of Skinoren?

All medications have some side effects but not everyone will experience them. Some side effects are more common than others, and the rarer side effects have been known to affect 1 in a 1,000 people. If you’re experiencing any side effects while using this medication you should stop applying the cream and speak to a doctor about lowering your dose or changing to an alternative acne treatment.

Very common/common side effects

Side effects which may affect up to 1 in 10 people include burning, itching or abnormal redness of the skin, or scaling, pain, dryness and irritation of the site that the cream is applied to.

Uncommon side effects

Side effects which affect fewer people (up to 1 in 100 people) may include changes to skin where the cream has been applied such as greasy skin, acne, loss of skin colour, tingling, dermatitis, discomfort and swelling.

Rare side effects

Some side effects may occur on very rare occasions, affecting up to 1 in 1,000 people. These include cracking of the lips, vesicles (small blisters), eczema, ulceration, a warm feeling on the skin, and an allergic reaction such as a rash. You should be particularly careful of allergies and if you’re showing any signs of a reaction to Skinoren you should stop this treatment immediately.

Is Skinoren effective?

Skinoren is an effective way of treating the unpleasant and often debilitating skin condition, acne. It helps to clear acne, reduce its symptoms and prevent complications such as infection and scarring. Its effectiveness is visible after 4 weeks when the condition of the skin will be noticeably improved. However, treatment will need to be continued even if the skin seems to have improved to ensure the full effect of the medicine and that the skin has completely healed.
