Sodium Cromoglicate Eye Drops

Brand received may vary

Sodium cromoglicate eye drops are a type of medication which can treat symptoms of hay fever and other allergies which affect the eyes. People who are sensitive to the effects of pollen or other potential allergies can experience problems with their eyes which cause them to become itchy, watery, red, inflamed and puffy. Sodium cromoglicate can reduce these symptoms by blocking the production of histamine, a natural substance which the body uses when exposed to allergies. Sodium cromoglicate can be used on a daily basis by both adults and children (as long as they are at least six years old) and the medicine is currently sold under several different brand names.

What are Sodium Cromoglicate eye drops?

Sodium cromoglicate is a type of medicine used for treating eyes which have become irritated due to hay fever or other allergies. When people are exposed to a substance that provokes an allergic reaction (such as pollen or dust), then one of the common symptoms that can be experienced are itch, red and/or watery eyes. This symptom is not only annoying but can also be very disruptive, but medication like sodium cromoglicate can fight against this issue.

Anti-allergic eye drops like sodium cromoglicate prevent and relieve allergy symptoms in your eye (also known as allergic conjunctivitis) and they can prove particularly useful during the long months of the hay fever season. Sodium cromoglicate eye drops are sold online and in pharmacies under numerous brand names.

How does Sodium Cromoglicate work?

Sodium cromoglicate is an anti-allergy treatment known as a mast cell stabiliser. It works by blocking the release of natural substances in your eyes which can lead to an allergic reaction. Allergy symptoms in your eyes are caused mainly by the natural substance histamine. When you're exposed to an allergen like pollen, histamine sends messages to parts of your body, instructing them to remove the allergen as quickly as possible. It’s this response which leads to symptoms associated with allergic reactions including itchy and watery eyes.

Sodium cromoglicate can stabilise cells and treat allergic reactions in the eyes caused by pollens which occur in certain parts of the year, as well as those caused by substances which you can be exposed to at any time of the year. The former is known as ‘seasonal allergic conjunctivitis’ and the latter is known as ‘perennial allergic conjunctivitis’.

Who can use Sodium Cromoglicate?

Sodium cromoglicate can be used by adults and children (aged 6 or above) who are suffering from symptoms of hay fever or other allergies which are affecting their eyes. There are some circumstances where special care will be required in order to use these eye drops.

If you are pregnant, breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or you are using any other medication, then you should tell your doctor or local pharmacist about this before you start using sodium cromoglicate. If you are someone who wears soft contact lenses, then you should not be wearing them while using the eye drops.

How do I use Sodium Cromoglicate?

The standard dosage instructions for adults and children are to administer one or two drops into each eye on four occasions daily. Whether you apply one or two drops when a dose is due will depend on how severe your symptoms are and what your doctor advises. You should always follow instructions given by your doctor.

Your doctor and patient information leaflet can provide detailed instructions on how to apply sodium cromoglicate eye drops correctly. You can always refer to one or the other if you’re ever unsure about how to use this medication correctly.

If your symptoms do not improve or they get worse after using this medication, you should speak to your doctor or local pharmacist about this. If you forget a dose of this treatment, then use the drops as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. If that is the case, then skip the missed dose and take the following ones at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten one.

If you administer a higher dose of this medicine than you are meant to, then you should report this to your doctor. Too many of these eye drops increases the risk of experiencing side effects.

Sodium Cromoglicate side effects

Like with other medications, sodium cromoglicate eye drops could potentially cause side effects, but not all patients experience them. There is some possibility that using these eye drops could end up causing mild irritation, a stinging or burning sensation in your eyes or cause blurring of the eyesight. If any of these symptoms do occur, they usually happen immediately after using the eye drops and should only last for a short time.

If, however, you have side effects which last more than a few days or prove particularly severe, then you should contact a doctor or hospital as soon as possible. You should seek medical help immediately if you are experiencing itching, redness or swelling which is getting progressively worse (this could be an indicator that you are allergic to the eye drops).
