Sominex

Sominex tablets are a short-term treatment for sleeping problems. They contain an antihistamine called promethazine and make chemical changes to the brain to induce drowsiness and encourage a healthy amount of sleep. If you have recently been experiencing disturbances to your usual sleeping pattern, then a medication like sominex can prove effective in restoring it. Since sominex is meant to treat short-term/temporary bouts of sleepless nights, patients should consult a doctor on what steps to take if these tablets prove insufficient after a week of use.

Buy Sominex sleeping tablets online uk

Sominex is the brand name of a certain type of tablets used as a night time sleep aid. They can be used to correct temporary disturbances of sleep pattern when there is difficulty going to sleep or staying asleep, which can be caused by things such as alternation of normal routine.

You can buy sominex tablets online from fully-registered UK online pharmacies such as ours, provided you complete a short consultation with a GMC/EU certified doctor. The consultation involves answering some questions about the symptoms you’re treating and other relevant health-related queries.

How does Sominex work?

Sominex tablets contain promethazine hydrochloride which is a type of sedating antihistamine. It is able to block the normal actions of histamine, a chemical which stimulates arousal-promoting areas of the brain. This action reduces alertness and increases drowsiness, which encourages the brain to fall asleep and increase the amount of deep sleep possible.

This medication is intended as a short-term treatment for patients who have been experiencing sleep problems. You should not take sominex tablets for more than a week without first consulting your doctor.

Sominex herbal

Alongside ‘regular’ sominex sleeping tablets, there also exists an herbal version of these pills. Sominex herbal tablets can also treat short-term sleeping problems. What makes them different is the ingredients they use.

Each herbal tablet contains a blend of sleep-inducing herbs including valerian, hops strobile and passionflower. These ingredients not only sedative effects on the brain but can also help to calm your nerves, so they are usually effective at working together to provide you a peaceful night of sleep.

Am I safe to take Sominex tablets?

It’s important to make sure you are safe to take sominex before starting on this medication. There are certain health-related circumstances which may make it inappropriate for you to use this treatment.

You should not use sominex if any of the following applies to you:

  • You are experiencing concussion, lightheadedness, drowsiness or dizziness or you have recently had a head injury
  • You have taken MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) for depression within the last two weeks
  • You are pregnant
  • You are under the age of 16

Also, you should speak to your doctor or local pharmacist for advice on using sominex if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Breathing problems such as asthma or bronchitis
  • Difficulty passing urine
  • Glaucoma
  • Prostate trouble
  • Kidney or liver problems
  • Heart problems
  • A blocked intestine
  • You are being treated for seizures (such as epilepsy) or have experienced seizures in the past

If you are currently taking any other medicines or have used any in the recent past, then you should inform your doctor or local pharmacist about this before you start using sominex. Certain medicines can interact with the effects of sleeping tablets like sominex. It’s particularly important to mention if you are currently using any of the following:

  • Any other medicines which cause drowsiness (such as sedatives or relaxants)
  • Any medicines which may give you a dry mouth or blurred vision (such as atropine or antidepressants)
  • Any medicines used to reduce or prevent seizures
  • Strong painkillers (such as codeine or morphine)
  • Allergy skin tests (sominex could cause these to give false readings)
  • Pregnancy tests based on urine samples (sominex could cause these to give false readings)

Sominex dosage instructions

The recommended dosage for sominex is to take a single tablet at bedtime. It may be taken up to one hour after going to bed when you are having difficulty going to sleep.

This medication is not meant to be taken for more than 7 days in a row. If natural sleep doesn’t return after 7 days or you have repeated bouts of sleeplessness, then talk to your doctor for advice on the best steps to take.

If you accidentally take a higher dosage of this medicine than you are meant to, or someone you know below the age of 16 takes this medicine, then contact your doctor or nearest hospital emergency department immediately. An overdose of this medicine can potentially cause a wide range of symptoms including dilated pupils, involuntary movements, uneven heartbeat and loss of consciousness.

Sominex side effects

Like with any other medication, sominex does carry some risk of causing side effects, but it’s overall likely that you won’t notice any. If you do experience any side effects after taking a sominex tablet, then report this to your doctor, local pharmacist or a hospital as soon as possible. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any serious side effects such as symptoms of an allergic reaction or symptoms which indicate heart or liver problems.
