What is Tamiflu and what does it do?

Tamiflu is an antiviral medicine used to prevent the outbreak of flu in children and adults. Tamiflu is not meant to replace flu vaccines, but may be prescribed to treat or help prevent influenza.

Tamiflu capsules contain the active ingredient oseltamivir, and works by preventing the virus from spreading within the body. The sooner the user starts taking the medicine, the higher the efficacy.

When is Tamiflu prescribed?

Tamiflu may be prescribed for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated illness caused by the common influenza (influenza A and B). For Tamiflu to be effective, the flu symptoms must not have been present for any more than 48 hours.

Tamiflu is also indicated for the prevention of influenza. It may then be prescribed to patients who has been in close contact with an infected individual, or to be taken during a community outbreak of influenza.

Please note, Tamiflu is not a substitute for annual influenza vaccinations.

Who should take Tamiflu?

Tamiflu is primarily prescribed to individuals who may be at risk of influenza related complications or have an impaired immune system. Tamiflu may cause side effects such as nausea and vomiting, and you should consult your GP before ordering to discuss whether Tamiflu is the best option for you.

Certain medicine and conditions may interact with Tamiflu. Do not take Tamiflu before consulting your GP if any of the below applies to you:

  • If you are allergic or sensitive to oseltamivir or any of the other ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet.
  • If you are taking chlorpropamide to treat diabetes.
  • If you are taking methotrexate to treat rheumatoid arthritis.
  • If you are taking phenylbutazone to treat pain and inflammation.
  • If you are taking probenecid to treat gout.

What is the recommended dosage of Tamiflu?

You should follow the doctor’s instructions on how to take this medicine. The doses outlined below is for your reference only. Never exceed the stated dose. Swallow the capsules whole with water, preferably with food.

Tamiflu doses for adults (with a body weight of 40kg or more)

To treat flu, take 75mg twice daily for 5 days. Take 1 capsule in the morning and 1 in the evening. Start taking the capsules as soon as possible and ideally within 2 days of noticing flu symptoms.

The prevent flu, take 75mg once daily for 10 days. Take the capsule in the mornings with your breakfast.

Does Tamiflu cause any side effects?

Yes, Tamiflu may cause side effects, although not everyone will notice or experience them. It is important that you read through the patient information leaflet before taking Tamiflu to familiarise yourself with any possible side effects.

Common side effects associated with taking Tamiflu includes:

  • Feeling or being sick.
  • Stomach ache.
  • Stomach upset.
  • Headache and pain.
  • Can I reduce the risk of getting side effects?

    Yes, you can reduce the risk of experiencing side effects by taking the capsules with food. You can also reduce the risk of side effects by informing our doctors through the medical questionnaire about any medical conditions you may have, and any medicines you may take.
