What is Fexofenadine and what does it do?

Fexofenadine, here sold under the brand name Telfast, is a medicine used to relieve allergic reactions, such as hay fever. Telfast provides relief from various symptoms, including runny and itchy eyes, blocked or runny nose, sneezing and hives.

Telfast contains the active ingredient fexofenadine. It is an antihistamine and works by blocking the effects of histamine in the body.

When is Fexofenadine prescribed?

Telfast fexofenadine may be prescribed to adults who suffer from symptoms associated with hay fever, also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis. Fexofenadine usually relieves symptoms within an hour with the effect lasting up to 24 hours.

Fexofenadine is provided in the form of film coated tablets. Each tablet contains 120mg of fexofenadine hydrochloride. The tablets are usually taken for as long as symptoms persist.

Is Fexofenadine suitable for my condition?

What is the recommended dosage of Fexofenadine?

You should follow the doctor’s instructions on how to take this medicine. The doses outlined below is for your reference only. The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. You are advised to take the tablet before a meal.

Telfast fexofenadine doses for adults

The recommended dose is 1 tablet (120mg) taken once daily.

Does Fexofenadine cause any side effects?

Yes, just like all medicines, Telfast may cause side effects. Always read through the patient information leaflet before taking this medicine as it is important that you familiarise yourself with any potential side effects.

Common side effects associated with taking Telfast include but are not limited to:

  • Headache.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Feeling sick (nausea).
  • Dizziness.

Contact you GP or nearest surgery immediately if you notice any signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat or difficulty breathing.

Can I reduce the risk of getting side effects?
