What is Vicks Sinex Micromist nasal spray?

Vicks Sinex Micromist is a nasal spray used to treat nasal congestion which occurs as a result of allergies (including those associated with hay fever), a cold or sinusitis. When it is used, this nasal spray takes effect within minutes and its benefits last for up to 6-8 hours. Vicks Sinex Micromist is available without a prescription and easy to use, but you should always check carefully if this medicine is safe and appropriate for you to use and you understand how to use it correctly.

How Vicks Sinex Micromist works

Vicks Sinex Micromist contains oxymetazoline hydrochloride as its active ingredient. It is a decongestant which can reduce blockage in the nose by thinning the blood vessels which have become swollen as a result of allergies or an infection. This special ability of the medicinal spray is what allows it to be effective for patients affected by allergies or a cold. Both problems share similar symptoms but are caused by very different reasons, yet the Micromist is flexible enough to deal with nose blockage in either case.

Who can and cannot use Vicks Sinex Micromist?

If you are looking to treat nasal congestion caused by allergies like hay fever, sinusitis or a cold, then you can consider Vick Sinex Micromist. There are certain circumstances which do make it unsafe to use this medicine, so make sure none of them apply to you.

Do not use this nasal spray if:

  • You are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitor or have used them within the last two weeks
  • You suffer from acute heart disease or cardiac asthma
  • You suffer from increased eyeball-pressure (known as narrow-angle glaucoma)
  • You have had an operation to remove your pituitary gland
  • You have inflamed skin or mucous membranes of your nostrils or have scabs in your nose

If you have any medical conditions or you’re currently using any other medication, then you should consult your doctor about using Vicks Sinex Micromist before you start. It’s particularly important to have a consultation if you are managing high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, depression or Parkinson’s disease. Seek advice as well if you are pregnant and breastfeeding and use the spray with caution.

This spray can be used by children aged 12 or above, assuming none of the issues mentioned earlier apply.

Instructions for using Vicks Sinex Micromist

The recommended dose is 1 or 2 sprays per nostril every 6 to 8 hours unless advised otherwise by your doctor. Avoid using Vicks Sinex Micromist for more than 7 days in a row. Using too much of this spray could cause a blocked nose or other side effects to occur.

When you have removed the cap and you are ready to use the spray, keep the bottle upright with the nasal applicator just entering the nostril. Hold the other nostril closed. Then spray and breathe in deeply through your nose at the same time. Repeat the procedure for the other nostril. Then wipe the nasal applicator with a clean, wet tissue and replace the cap immediately after application.

Does Vicks Sinex Micromist cause side effects?

Like with other medicines, the possibility of Vicks Sinex Micromist causing side effects cannot be ruled out. However, side effects are rarely reported by users of this treatment so you’re unlikely to notice any. The patient information leaflet for this product mentions that in uncommon cases, this spray can cause sneezing and potential dryness or irritation in the nose, mouth or throat. Other side effects are possible but very unlikely to occur. Any side effects which prove to be serious or prolonged should be reported to a doctor.
