Vipidia

Vipidia is a prescription medication given to adults for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes or non-insulin dependent diabetes is a condition that affects the blood sugar levels in the body. There are two types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2, and in people with type 2 diabetes, the blood sugar levels become too high due to a lack of insulin production and too much glucose. Type 2 diabetes usually develops in adult life as a result of poor diet, lack of exercise, and being overweight. If left untreated diabetics can develop life threatening complications.

When blood sugar levels cannot be controlled with diet and exercise alone, medication is needed. Vipidia is an oral anti-diabetic medicine that helps to lower blood sugar in type 2 diabetes.

How does Vipidia work?

Vipidia contains the active ingredient alogliptin which belongs to a group of medicines called DPP-4 inhibitors. Alogliptin increases the amount of insulin that your body produces, as insulin is responsible for keeping blood sugar levels under control. It also reduces the production of glucagon which is a type of hormone that increases glucose production, and slows down the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream. Vipidia is taken with other antidiabetic medicines to effectively control blood sugar levels.

Who is Vipidia suitable for?

Vipidia is suitable for adults with type 2 diabetes, as type 1 is often treated with daily insulin injections. Some diabetes medications are not effective alone for some people, and they may need additional medication to help control blood sugar levels. Vipidia is suitable for these patients and can be used with other diabetes medication such as metformin.

Who is Vipidia not suitable for?

However, not everyone will be suitable for Vipidia. There are a number of reasons why this medication is not suitable for some people, usually because of an existing health condition that may be affected by this medication, or if you’re taking other medication that may interact with Vipidia. If you’re taking other medication, have an existing health condition, or are pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding, you should consult your doctor before taking Vipidia.

Can I take Vipidia while pregnant?

It’s not advised that pregnant or breastfeeding women should take Vipidia as there is not enough experience of use in pregnancy or breastfeeding to prove whether or not it is safe. Always consult your doctor before taking Vipidia if you’re pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Your doctor may feel that it is safe for you to take.

Vipidia and health conditions

There is a risk of this medication affecting certain health conditions, so if you currently have another condition other than diabetes you should check that there isn’t a risk of it worsening your condition. You should be particularly cautious of taking this medicine if you have conditions such as kidney or liver disease, heart failure, or disease of the pancreas. Some diabetic patients may also be unsuitable to take Vipidia if they have type 1 diabetes as their body does not produce insulin, or if they have diabetic ketoacidosis which is a serious complication of diabetes when the body runs out of insulin.

If you’re allergic to alogliptin or any other ingredient in Vipidia you will not be suitable for this medicine. Allergic reactions can be severe and potentially life threatening so it’s important to avoid this medicine if you’re aware of an allergy.

Vipidia and other medication

It’s important to tell a doctor if you are currently taking any other medication before starting Vipidia. Taking other medication alongside Vipidia or vice versa may increase or decrease its effectiveness or cause side effects. You should speak to your doctor about taking Vipidia with other antidiabetic medicines known as sulphonylurea (glipizide, tolbutamide, glibenclamide), or insulin. Your dose may need to be lowered if these are combined with Vipidia.

How to take Vipidia

How much of this medication you take depends on the severity of your condition and if you have any other health conditions. For instance, if you have kidney disease or reduced liver function you will be prescribed a lower dose. Usually, the recommended dose for this medicine is 25 mg once a day, and it is prescribed with other diabetes medicines to control blood glucose levels.

What are the side effects of Vipidia?

Like all medicines, Vipidia does have some side effects, however, not everyone will experience them. Some side effects are more common than others. You should particularly look out for signs of an allergic reaction which may include a rash, raised red patches, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and throat, difficulty breathing and swallowing. Allergic reactions may become more severe, there’s a chance of developing a severe skin reaction called Stevens-Johnson syndrome. However, allergic reactions are rare but it’s important to be aware of them.

There is also a possibility of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) when Vipidia is combined with other diabetes medicines. Symptoms of low blood sugar include trembling, sweating, anxiety, blurred vision, tingling lips, paleness, mood change or feeling confused.

Other more common symptoms may include:

  • Cold symptoms such as a sore throat and stuffy or blocked nose
  • Rash
  • Itchy skin
  • Headache
  • Stomach ache
  • Diarrhoea

There may be more side effects which are not listed above, which is why it’s always important to check the patient information leaflet for other side effects. If you’re experiencing negative changes to your health whilst taking Vipidia you should consult with your doctor to see if the changes are related to taking this medication.

Is Vipidia affective and how long will I need to take it?

When used correctly with other antidiabetic medication, Vipidia can effectively control blood sugar levels, and it begins to work within a few hours of taking it. As diabetes is a long term condition you may need to take this medicine for the rest of your life or at least for a long period of time if other methods are not helping to control your blood sugar such as diet and exercise.
