Erectile Dysfunction

Vitaros Cream

Vitaros contains the active ingredient alprostadil, and is used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It works by dilating the blood vessels in the penis, making it easier for blood to flow into it and cause an erection.

Whilst it isn’t a first line treatment, it can be a fantastic option for men that don’t respond well to tablets such as sildenafil or tadalafil. Unlike tablets, Vitaros is applied into the urethra via the tip of the penis, meaning that it works directly on the area you want it to. The local application also ensures that the medication begins to work within 5-30 minutes.

There are some risks that come with using Vitaros, as with any medication, which is why you should always read the patient information leaflet that comes with the product to make sure it’s safe for you to use.

Please note: This treatment can only be prescribed to males. If you’re ordering this from a female’s account, your order will be declined by our doctors for patient safety reasons. Please make sure that all orders come from the account of the patient who will be taking this medication.

  • Vitaros Cream isn't a first-line treatment for erectile dysfunction. Our doctors can only prescribe this to you if you've already had it prescribed by your own GP

Instructions on how to administer the drug are outlined in the patient information leaflet which you should read thoroughly before you take any of the medication. However, if you're still not sure on how to use it, you should ring your GP surgery and book an appointment with a practice nurse or doctor who will be able to show you how to administer the medication safely.

What is Vitaros Cream?

Vitaros cream is a treatment for erectile dysfunction. It contains the ingredient alprostadil – a vasodilator which is identical to the naturally-occurring prostaglandin E1. Vasodilators help to widen the blood vessels, and in the case of vitaros cream, this helps blood flow more easily into the penis, encouraging an erection.

Unlike more traditional treatments for erectile dysfunction, Vitaros Cream is applied directly to the penis, meaning that it doesn’t pass through the stomach or is processed by the kidneys, making it a safer option for those that are unable to take oral tablets for these reasons.

How long does Vitaros cream take to work?

After application, you can expect the medication to start working within 5-30 minutes, compared to oral tablets that take at least half an hour to start having an effect. The rapid response rate is due to the fact that it’s a local treatment. Until your erection appears, it’s a good idea to engage in foreplay or solo stimulation in order to enhance your erection and overall sexual experience.

How long will my erection last with Vitaros Cream?

Your erection should last between 1-2 hours, giving most people enough time to enjoy sex with their partner/s. Although the effects of Vitaros don’t last as long as oral tablets such as sildenafil (Viagra) or tadalafil (Cialis), it should still give you a sufficient amount of time.

However, if you find that your erection doesn’t last long enough with this medication, please go back to your doctor to explore alternative treatments.

If you find that your erection lasts for more than 4 hours, please call your GP immediately, or go to your nearest urgent care unit or A&E department.

Can I use Vitaros?

Vitaros can be used by most men, but it’s important to know that it isn’t a first line treatment for erectile dysfunction. Usually, Vitaros cream is recommended to men who haven’t achieved results with tablets or are unable to take them. You should also avoid the treatment or speak to your doctor if you have any of the following conditions or medical problems:

  • Low blood pressure
  • History of heart attack
  • Dizziness
  • Allergic to any of the ingredients
  • Have a condition that may cause long-lasting erections
  • Abnormally formed penis
  • Inflammation or infection of the penis
  • Prone to a venous thrombosis
  • Told not to have sex for health reasons
  • If your partner is pregnant or breastfeeding and you don’t use condoms.

If you aren’t sure if any of the above conditions apply to you, please speak to healthcare professional before ordering Vitaros, as it’s important to make sure that it’s safe for you to use the medication. You’ll also need to check that it’s safe for you to use vitaros if you:

  • Have a penile implant
  • Are using any other medicines for erectile dysfunction
  • Need to take alpha blocking medicines or treatment for high blood pressure
  • Are using decongestants
  • Are taking appetite suppressants
  • Need medicines that help to prevent blood clots.

Any of the above medications might interact with viratos, so it’s important to check with your doctor or pharmacist that you’re able to use them in conjunction. You might be advised to try a different treatment for erectile dysfunction, or told to use it with caution. Don’t make this decision on your own.

What are the side effects of Vitaros?

Vitaros is a medication, and like any other drug, it can carry side effects. However, this doesn’t mean you’ll experience any, though it’s important to familiarise yourself with the list to make sure you’re aware of any potential symptoms you might feel as a result of using Vitaros. Some of the most commonly reported side effects are:

  • Mild aching at site of application
  • Burning pain at site of application
  • Redness at site of application
  • Genital pruritus (itching)
  • Penile oedema (build-up of fluid)
  • Inflammation of glans penis
  • Tingling
  • Throbbing numbness
  • Fainting
  • Low blood pressure
  • Genital rash
  • Scrotal pain
  • Urinary tract inflammation

Some of these side effects are rare, so try not to worry about any that look alarming. However, please see your doctor if you’re bothered by any of the symptoms and feel like you need to stop treatment.

With Vitaros, it’s important to realise that your sexual partner/s might also experience some side effects. You should check that they aren’t allergic to any of the ingredients in the medication either, especially if you aren’t planning on wearing a condom. If your partner is female and you’re going to have penetrative vaginal sex, she might experience the following symptoms:

  • Mild vaginal burning or itching
  • Vaginitis

How can I enhance my erection?

Many men want to maximise the potential of their erection when taking medication such as Vitaros. Luckily, there are several things you can do to enhance your experience with it, such as:

  • Engaging in foreplay or solo stimulation until your erection as fully developed
  • Making sure you’re well rested
  • Practicing pelvic exercises
  • Having sex in positions that don’t restrict the blood flow to the penis
  • Refraining from alcohol use when using Vitaros or engaging in sexual intercourse
  • Making sure you’re as calm as possible.

Following the above tips will hopefully strengthen the effects of the medication and make the experience more enjoyable for you and your partner(s).

How often can I use Vitaros?

You shouldn’t use vitaros more than once in any 24-hour period, and no more than 3 times per week. If you feel as though you need to use the treatment more often than this, please speak to your doctor to discuss other options that you might be able to use more.
