Volumatic Asthma Spacer

The Volumatic Spacer Device is for the treatment of asthma. It is used together with your metered dose inhaler (MDI) to deliver the medication to your lungs more effectively. The Volumatic Spacer Device makes using your inhaler easier and can help to reduce the side effects associated with using an inhaler such as sore throat and irritation.

Using a spacer device helps you to better manage your asthma overall, helping to use your medication more efficiently and reduce side effects.

This Volumatic Spacer is to be used by adults only, babies and small children should use the paediatric spacer device with the soft mask.

Speak to your healthcare provider if you’re unsure whether your inhaler is compatible with the Volumatic Spacer device.

What is an asthma spacer and how do they work?

An asthma spacer is a large plastic device that attaches to an inhaler and has a mouthpiece on the opposite end. Upon pressing the inhaler your medication is released into the spacer chamber, this allows the medication to enter the lungs at a slower pace rather than all at once, it also prevents your dose of medication from escaping into the air. Many people find that their inhaler is much easier to use when it is attached to a spacer device.

Spacers can help you use your medication more efficiently, it directs the medication to your lungs and reduces the risk of it dispersing to other parts of the body so you’re less likely to experience side effects, and it may mean that you don’t use as much medication.

Using an inhaler alone increases the risk of throat irritation, changes to your voice, and fungal infections such as oral thrush, but using a spacer reduces this risk.

Is my inhaler compatible with the Volumatic Spacer Device?

The Volumatic Spacer is compatible with most MDI inhalers but you should always check with your healthcare provider that your specific inhaler will fit this spacer device. An ill-fitting spacer may affect your dose of medication and it may not work effectively. If your inhaler doesn’t seem to fit adequately to your spacer do not continue to use it, use your inhaler alone and speak to your doctor or nurse about the most appropriate spacer to use with your inhaler.

How to use Volumatic Spacer

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how to use the spacer properly or follow the instructions given to you by your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Before using it for the first time you will need to clean the spacer using a mild detergent or sterilised solution with warm water, you should then leave it to dry at room temperature, do not rinse it. You may clean it twice a week if you’re using it daily and you can use a soft clean toothbrush to clean the spacer.

To get started, fit the two halves of the spacer together by lining up the notches and pressing them together firmly. You will need to fit your inhaler to the end of the spacer (the opposite end of the mouthpiece), but before you do so remove the cover from the mouthpiece of your inhaler and check that there aren’t any loose objects and that it is clean, you should also check the mouthpiece of the spacer for dirt or objects.

If you’re using the inhaler for the first time or you haven’t used it in over a week you will need to release one or two puffs into the air directing it away from your face.

With the inhaler attached, hold the spacer device up so it is level with your mouth with one hand at the inhaler end and the other gripping the middle of the spacer. Breathe out as far as you can and place the mouthpiece between your teeth gently, with your lips closed firmly around the mouthpiece, but avoid covering the side holes with your lips. You can then press down your inhaler to release a dose of medicine and take a deep breath in to make sure the medicine reaches your lungs and you can breathe out into spacer, you may hear a clicking or rattling sound as you do this. Breathe in one puff of medicine at a time, rather than all of your dose at once.

After inhaling one puff, remove the spacer from your mouth and hold your breath for as long as is comfortable and then breathe out. Wait 30 seconds between each puff of medicine and repeat the process.

Refer to the patient information leaflet for full instructions with pictures to show you how to use this spacer device.

Looking after your spacer device

In order to get the maximum benefits from your spacer device it’s important to look after and store it correctly. Clean your spacer with a mild detergent at least twice a week if you use it daily and always leave it to air-dry as this will reduce any static. Once dry put the spacer back together and wipe the mouthpiece before using again.

Store your spacer in a clean dry place away from any liquids or dust, or small objects which could get in the spacer. When taking your spacer out with you, store it in a sealed bag but not a plastic bag as this may cause static.
