Xyzal

Xyzal is a medication used to reduce the effects of allergic reactions provoked by allergens entering the nose. It can also be used to treat the effects of nettle rash. This treatment blocks many of the annoying symptoms that people can experience when exposed to an allergen by stopping the body from releasing certain chemicals.

What is Xyzal?

Xyzal tablets are an antihistamine medication used to reduce the effects of allergic reactions. They are particularly effective at dealing with allergic rhinitis, which means inflammation of the inside of the nose caused by allergens like pollen, dust, mould or flakes of skin from certain animals.

This medication is also popularly used to treat nettle rash (urticarial). The active ingredient contained in Xyzal is called levocetirizine dihydrochloride.

How does Xyzal work?

Xyzal is able to reduce the effect allergens by blocking the histamine receptors found in a person’s body. This prevents the release of other allergy-fighting chemicals and stops an increase in blow flow in the affected area. Therefore, the immune system’s reaction is reduced which minimises the frustrating symptoms this whole process can cause.

For those concerned about experiencing a reaction due to certain allergens, it is always ideal if they can avoid exposure to these allergens in the first place. However, for some people that is not always possible which is when treatments like Xyzal prove very useful.

How is Xyzal used?

The usual recommended dose for these tablets is to take one a day. They should be swallowed whole with water and can be taken with or without food. There’s no strict guidance on how many days you should take Xyzal for. It depends on the nature of your complaints.

What are the side effects of Xyzal?

You may never experience any side effects when taking this medication, but like with all medicines they are possible. The most commonly reported side effects when it comes to using Xyzal are:

  • Dry mouth
  • Headache
  • Tiredness
  • Somnolence/drowsiness

Other, more discomforting side effects (like exhaustion and abdominal pain) are possible with this treatment but are much rarer. There’s also a small possibility that taking Xyzal can cause a hypersensitivity reaction. If this happens to you then stop taking the medication and tell your doctor. The following symptoms are indicators that you’re experiencing a hypersensitive reaction to this medication:

  • Swelling of the mouth, tongue, face and/or throat
  • Breathing or swallowing difficulties caused by chest tightness or wheezing
  • Hives
  • Sudden fall in blood pressure potentially leading to collapse or shock

Can I use Xyzal?

Xyzal is suitable for adults and children aged 6 years and above. However, you should avoid taking this medicine if you know you have an allergy to any of the ingredients it includes or you have a severe impairment of kidney function (severe renal failure). If you have some impairment of kidney function, you may still be able to take this medication. You’ll potentially be given a lower dose than typical, depending on how your doctor assesses your condition.

You should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this treatment if any of the following applies to you:

  • You are currently having difficulty emptying your bladder (because of a condition such as an enlarged prostate or spinal cord injury)
  • You suffer from epilepsy or are at risk of convulsions (this medication may cause seizure aggravation)
  • You are scheduled for allergy testing
  • There are other medicines you are currently taking or might take in the near future
  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding
  • You have lactose intolerance (Xyzal tablets contain lactose)

What if I take too much Xyzal?

If an adult takes more Xyzal than they are meant to, they could experience somnolence (a strong desire for sleep or sleeping for unusually long periods). Children who take too much Xyzal may initially show signs of restlessness and excitation followed by somnolence.

What happens if I stop taking Xyzal?

If you decide to stop treatment with this medication, it should not have any negative effects. However, it is worth mentioning that although rare, an itchy skin condition called pruritus can emerge not long after you stop taking Xyzal. It is possible to get the symptoms even if they were not present before you started treatment. The symptoms can either disappear shortly and spontaneously, or they can prove intense enough to warrant restarting your treatment. The symptoms should disappear if you restart the treatment.

Drinks that can be taken with Xyzal

Water is the best drink to take with medication like this one. Caution is advised if taking this treatment with alcohol or other agents acting on the brain. For some patients, taking Xyzal together with alcohol can cause a major reduction in alertness.
