High Blood Pressure

Zestril

Zestril is a prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) to prevent dangerous complications of this condition including heart attack and stroke. Zestril contains lisinopril which belongs to a group of medicines called ACE inhibitors, lisinopril is the generic version of Zestril. As well as high blood pressure, Zestril is also used in the treatment of heart failure and heart attacks, as well as kidney problems in diabetic patients. When blood pressure becomes too high it can cause narrowing arteries and makes it difficult to pump blood around the body.

High blood pressure can be managed by making some lifestyle changes such as healthy eating, exercising more, and quitting smoking and alcohol. In some cases, medication is necessary to lower blood pressure particularly if you’re at risk of complications, which is when Zestril will be prescribed.

How does it work?

Medication such as Zestril aims to lower blood pressure to help blood flow through the body easier to increase the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart. The active ingredient Lisinopril does this by widening and relaxing the blood vessels. Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor which stops a substance in the body from narrowing the blood vessels and therefore raising blood pressure. This means that the heart does not have to work as hard to pump blood around the body, as pressure on the heart can lead to serious complications such as heart attack.

Who is suitable to take Zestril?

Zestril is suitable for those with high blood pressure who are at risk of serious complications of hypertension. Zestril can be taken by adults and children over the age of 6. This medicine is also suitable for those who have heart failure, or have recently had a heart attack.

Who is Zestril not suitable for?

You should consult with our online doctors before being prescribed this medication to determine your suitability. Zestril may also not be suitable if you’re pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.

Zestril and pregnancy

You must tell your doctor if you become pregnant and are taking Zestril. This medicine has been known to cause serious harm to unborn babies so it is not recommended for use during pregnancy, particularly after the third month. Zestril is also not recommended to take while breastfeeding. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding and have high blood pressure your doctor may want you to take an alternative medicine instead of Zestril.

You should not take Zestril if you’re allergic to lisinopril, or any other ingredient in this medicine. If you or a family member had ever had a severe allergic reaction to an ACE inhibitor you should not take Zestril. Allergic reactions can be dangerous and life threatening so if you’re aware of an allergy you should avoid this medicine, however, if you experience a reaction while taking Zestril you should seek medical help immediately.

Zestril and other medication

You should always check when starting a new medication that it is safe to take with any existing medication that you may be taking to avoid side effects and interaction between the medications. There are some medicines you should be particularly aware of if you’re taking them with Zestril. You may not be suitable if you’re taking the following medicines:
